James Cassels (British Army Officer)
Field Marshal Sir Archibald James Halkett Cassels, (28 February 1907 – 13 December 1996) was a senior British Army officer who served as Chief of the General Staff (CGS), the professional head of the British Army, from 1965 to 1968. As a young man he was a first-class cricket player, initially playing in India for the Europeans against the Hindus in the Lahore Tournament and going on to play for a Punjab Governor's XI against Northern India team and for a Viceroy's XI against the Roshanara Club. He later played for the British Army cricket team against the RAF at The Oval and then played for the Egyptian national side against HM Martineau's XI in Alexandria. Cassels served in the Second World War as commander of the 152nd Infantry Brigade, commanding the brigade during Operation Goodwood, Operation Totalize and Operation Veritable, before becoming General Officer Commanding 51st (Highland) Division in the closing stages of the war. James Cassels (politician)
Sir James Dale Cassels (22 March 1877 – 7 February 1972) was a British judge, journalist and Conservative politician. Early life He was the only son of Robert Cassels, assistant clerk at the Bow Street Magistrates' Court. He was educated at the United Westminster City School where he learnt shorthand. Journalism He began work as a reporter with the ''Sussex Coast Mercury'' in Worthing, subsequently moving to London, where he worked for the ''Chelsea News'' and the ''Fulham Chronicle''. In 1898 he joined the staff of the ''Morning Post''. He stayed with the paper for fourteen years, originally as a parliamentary correspondent, later becoming a sub-editor. Legal career In 1908 Cassels was called to the bar at the Middle Temple. He practised on the South-Eastern Circuit, and his heavy caseload led to him abandoning journalism in 1911.
