James Byron Moran
James Byron Moran (June 20, 1930 – April 21, 2009) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Education and career Moran was born in Evanston, Illinois, on June 20, 1930. Moran received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1952. He was a sergeant in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. After the war, he went law school, receiving a Bachelor of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1957. He was a law clerk for Judge J. Edward Lumbard of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1957 to 1958. He entered private practice in Chicago, Illinois, in 1958, continuing until his appointment to the federal bench in 1979. He served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1965 to 1967 and as a member of the Evanston City Council from 1971 to 1975. Senior Status
Senior status is a form of semi-retirement for United States federal judges. To qualify, a judge in the Federal judiciary of the United States, federal court system must be at least 65 years old, and the sum of the judge's age and years of service as a federal judge must be at least 80 years. As long as senior judges carry at least a 25 percent caseload or meet other criteria for activity, they remain entitled to maintain a staffed office and chambers, including a secretary and their normal complement of law clerks, and they continue to receive annual cost-of-living increases. Senior judges vacate their seats on the bench, and the President of the United States, president may appoint new full-time judges to fill those seats. Esophageal Cancer
Esophageal cancer is cancer arising from the esophagus—the food pipe that runs between the throat and the stomach. Symptoms often include difficulty in swallowing and weight loss. Other symptoms may include pain when swallowing, a hoarse voice, enlarged lymph nodes ("glands") around the collarbone, a dry cough, and possibly coughing up or vomiting blood.
