James Burns (Australian Shipowner)
Sir James Burns KCMG (10 February 184622 August 1923) was a noted businessman, shipowner and philanthropist in Australia. In particular, he is known as the co-founder of Burns Philp and Company, a shipping and trading company, and for establishing the Burnside Presbyterian Homes for Children in North Parramatta (now known as UnitingCare Burnside), a children and family welfare organisation. Early life Burns was born at Polmont, Scotland, the son of a merchant, David Burns, and educated at Newington Academy and the Royal High School in Edinburgh. He migrated to Queensland in 1862 and worked for three years in Western Queensland as a jackaroo. In 1865 he formed a Brisbane store, Burns & Scott, in partnership with his brother, and established the first stores in Gympie and nearby One Mile Creek and Kilkivan in 1867, when gold was found there. James Chalmers Burns (29 March 1809–30 November 1892) was a Scottish minister, who served as Moderator of the General Assembly for the Free Church of Scotland 1879/80. Early life and education He was born on 29 March 1809 in the manse at Brechin the second son of the Rev. James Burns (1774-1837) and his wife Christina Chalmers (1774-1837). James Richard Henry Burns (31 December 1916 – 26 December 2002) or also referred to as J. R. H. Burns, was a nobleman and police officer from England who served in several high-ranking positions which included being a member of the Brunei Privy Council and Brunei Police Commissioner. Biography Burns is born in England, on 31 December 1916. He was educated at Eastbourne College, and would go on to marry Rosamund Jackson (née Ward). He commenced his tenure with the Federated Malay States (FMS) Police in 1937, progressing through various ranks: Assistant Superintendent by 1940, Superintendent by 1950, Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Federation of Malaya by 1953, and finally, Senior Assistant Commissioner by 1957. James B. Burns (September 21, 1945 – December 11, 2020) was an American lawyer who served as the inspector general for the Illinois Secretary of State. He was also a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and American Basketball Association (ABA). A native of McLeansboro, Illinois, Burns was an all-state player who led McLeansboro High School to a fourth-place finish in the 1962 State Championship Tournament. He then played collegiately for Northwestern University, 1964–67, where he led the team in scoring all three seasons, was both All-American and Academic All-American in 1967, was All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten in 1966 and '67, and is still Northwestern's 12th all-time scorer, 3rd in scoring average, 10th in both field goals and free throws made, and 6th in points in a game (40).
