Jamie Burke (born October 15, 1980 in Cherry Point, North Carolina) is a former American rugby union player and now coach. Life Jamie Burke began playing rugby in 1998 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, where she went on to earn All-American Honors in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003. In 2003, Burke won the prestigious Woodley Award, given to the top collegiate player in the country. James Burk
James S. Burk (born 1948) is an American sociologist and professor at Texas A&M University. He is most notable as a scholar of military sociology, political sociology, and the history of sociology. He is a central figure in the study of civil-military relations in democratic societies. Biography Burk was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1948. He enlisted in the Maryland National Guard and served from 1968 to 1974. In 1975, he received his BS degree in sociology, magna cum laude, from Towson University. He then earned his MA in sociology in 1978 and PhD in sociology in 1982 from the University of Chicago. He cites his primary intellectual influences as Edward Shils and Morris Janowitz, founder of sociological studies of the military. Burk taught for two years at McGill University in Montreal and then joined Texas A&M University in 1983, where he is now a full professor. James Burke (space Engineer)
James Donahue Burke (September 18, 1925 – August 19, 2023) was an American lunar settlement and exploration expert. He was known for being the first manager of the Ranger program, and considered one of the pioneers of America's space program. Early life and career James Donahue Burke was born in Los Angeles County on September 18, 1925. He grew up in Claremont, California and graduated from Webb High School in 1942. In 1945, after graduating in mechanical engineering from California Institute of Technology, he became a U.S. naval aviator. Burke returned to Caltech to receive his MSc in aeronautics, before working for JPL in 1949. In his time at JPL, Burke was the Vega program director, developing the third stage of the general-purpose Vega launch vehicle, which was based on the Atlas rocket. James Burke (gangster)
James Burke (July 5, 1931 – April 13, 1996), also known as "Jimmy the Gent," was an American gangster and Lucchese crime family associate who is believed to have organized the 1978 Lufthansa heist, the largest cash robbery in American history at the time. He was believed to be responsible for the deaths of those involved in the months after the robbery. Following the testimony of Henry Hill, Burke was convicted in 1982, of conspiracy charges related to his involvement in the 1978–79 Boston College basketball point-shaving scandal, and sentenced to 12 years in prison. While in prison, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to another 20 years. He died of cancer at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, eight years before he would have been eligible for parole. James Lee Burke (born December 5, 1936) is an American author, best known for his Dave Robicheaux series. He has won Edgar Awards for ''Black Cherry Blues'' (1990) and ''Cimarron Rose'' (1998), and has also been presented with the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. The Robicheaux character has been portrayed twice on screen, first by Alec Baldwin (''Heaven's Prisoners'') and then Tommy Lee Jones (''In the Electric Mist''). James Cobb Burke (1915-1964) was an American photographer and photojournalist. He was born in Shanghai in 1915 to Methodist missionary parents. The family settled in Macon, Georgia, and Burke studied English at Emory University, graduating in 1937. He also attended Princeton briefly, before becoming a newspaper reporter. During WW2, he served Claire Chennault's 14th Air Force in Kunming, and published a book titled ''My Father in China''. After the war, he stayed on in China and joined Time-Life magazine as a stringer in 1947. After the Communist takeover of China, he moved to India where he eventually became New Delhi bureau chief of Time-Life magazine. He switched from writing to photographic reporting in the mid-1950s. He was one of the main presenters of the BBC1 science series ''Tomorrow's World'' from 1965 to 1971 and created and presented the television series '' Connections'' (1978), and its more philosophical sequel ''The Day the Universe Changed'' (1985), about the history of science and technology. James C. Burke, O.P. (November 30, 1926 – May 28, 1994) was an American-born bishop of the Catholic Church in Peru. He served as the Territorial Prelate of Chimbote from 1965 to 1978. After his retirement he served the Diocese of Wilmington in the U.S. state of Delaware from 1978 to 1994. Biography Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, James Burke was ordained a priest in the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) on June 8, 1956. On March 8, 1965 Pope Paul VI appointed him as the first Territorial Prelate of Chimbote. He participated in the fourth session of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. Jimmy Burke (baseball)
James Timothy Burke (October 12, 1874 – March 26, 1942) was a Major League Baseball third baseman, coach, and manager. He played for the Cleveland Spiders, St. Louis Perfectos, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago White Stockings, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals. Burke was the regular third baseman for the Cardinals from 1903 to 1905. He was named player-manager in the middle of the 1905, season but was replaced by Stanley Robison after amassing a record of 34–56. Playing career Burke made his debut in October of 1898 for the Cleveland Spiders. He was one of many players moved from Cleveland to St. Louis the following season, a move that stocked Cleveland with inferior and inept ball players that resulted in that team producing the worst record ever in Major league baseball.
