James Burke (bishop)
James C. Burke, O.P. (November 30, 1926 – May 28, 1994) was an American-born bishop of the Catholic Church in Peru. He served as the Territorial Prelate of Chimbote from 1965 to 1978. After his retirement he served the Diocese of Wilmington in the U.S. state of Delaware from 1978 to 1994. Biography Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, James Burke was ordained a priest in the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) on June 8, 1956. On March 8, 1965 Pope Paul VI appointed him as the first Territorial Prelate of Chimbote. He participated in the fourth session of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. Burke was named the Titular Bishop of ''Lamiggiga'' by Pope Paul on April 8, 1967. He was consecrated a bishop by Cardinal Richard Cushing of Boston on May 25, 1967. The principal co-consecrators were Bishop Walter Curtis of Bridgeport and Auxiliary Bishop Edward Swanstrom of New York. Territorial Prelate
A territorial prelate is, in Catholic usage, a prelate whose geographic jurisdiction, called territorial prelature, does not belong to any diocese and is considered a particular church. The territorial prelate is sometimes called a prelate ''nullius'', from the Latin ''nullius diœceseos'', prelate "of no diocese," meaning the territory falls directly under the 'exempt' jurisdiction of the Holy See (Pope of Rome) and is not a diocese under a residing bishop. The term is also used in a generic sense, and may then equally refer to an apostolic prefecture, an apostolic vicariate, a permanent apostolic administration (which are pre-diocesan, often missionary, or temporary), or a territorial abbacy (see there). Walter William Curtis
Walter William Curtis (May 3, 1913 – October 18, 1997) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport in Connecticut from 1961 to 1988. Curtis previously served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Newark in New Jersey from 1957 to 1961. Biography Early life Walter Curtis was born on May 3, 1913, in Jersey City, New Jersey. He studied at Fordham University in New York City. After graduating from Seton Hall University in 1934, he attended Immaculate Conception Seminary, both in South Orange, New Jersey. Curtis then went to Rome to attend the Pontifical North American College. Priesthood Curtis was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Newark by Bishop Ralph Leo Hayes on December 8, 1937.
