James Brennan (Queensland Politician)
James Brennan (25 February 1837 - 13 June 1917) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Brennan was born at Paisley, Scotland, the son of James Brennan Snr and his wife Jane (née Cruikshank). He was educated in Paisley and he arrived in Australia sometime before 1864 and took up mining at Gympie. He was an employee at the Queensland Meat Export and Agriculture Co. in Brisbane and Townsville, and from 1902 was the manager at the Lake's Creek Meatworks in Rockhampton. Electoral District Of Rockhampton North
Rockhampton North was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1888 to 1912, and from 1960 to 1992. It was based on the northern area of Rockhampton. In both incarnations, it was replaced by the district of Keppel. Rockhampton North was generally a safe seat for the Labor Party. It was one of the eleven seats held by Labor in their "cricket team" caucus after the 1974 election, their worst defeat until 2012. Rockhampton is a city in the Rockhampton Region of Central Queensland, Australia. The population of Rockhampton in June 2021 was 79,967, Estimated resident population, 30 June 2018. making it the fourth-largest city in the state outside of the cities of South East Queensland, and the 22nd-largest city in Australia. Today, Rockhampton is an industrial and agricultural centre of the north, and is the regional centre of Central Queensland. Rockhampton is one of the oldest cities in Queensland and in Northern Australia. In 1853, Charles and William Archer came across the Toonooba river, which is now also known as the Fitzroy River, which they claimed in honour of Sir Charles FitzRoy. In modern parlance, a colony is a territory subject to a form of foreign rule. 1912 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 27 April 1912 to elect the 72 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The election was the first for the recently formed Liberal government of Digby Denham, who had been premier since 7 February 1911. The opposition Labor Party was led by David Bowman, who had been Labor leader since 15 April 1907. Results Denham and his government were returned to office despite a swing to Labor of almost 10 percent. This was largely due to winning newly created seats in rural areas, while losing seats in Brisbane which mostly went to Labor. Queensland Parliament
The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. It has been the only unicameral state legislature in the country since the upper chamber, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922. Queensland Legislative Council
The Queensland Legislative Council was the upper house of the parliament in the Australian state of Queensland. It was a fully nominated body which first took office on 1 May 1860. It was abolished by the Constitution Amendment Act 1921, which took effect on 23 March 1922. Consequently, the Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the only unicameral state Parliament in Australia. Two territories, the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, also maintain unicameral parliaments. Most of the early members of the Council came from wealthy families, were well educated and were born in England.
