James Beattie (; 25 October 1735 – 18 August 1803) was a Scottish poet, moralist, and philosopher. Career He became schoolmaster of the parish of Fordoun in 1753. He took the position of usher at the grammar-school of Aberdeen in 1758. In 1760, he was, to his surprise, appointed Professor of Moral Philosophy at Marischal College (later part of Aberdeen University) as a result of the influence exerted by his close friend, Robert Arbuthnot of Haddo. In the following year he published a volume of poems, ''The Judgment of Paris'' (1765), which attracted attention. But the two works that brought him most fame were '' An Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth'', and his poem of ''The Minstrel''. The ''Essay'', intended as an answer to David Hume, had great immediate success, and led to an introduction to the King, a pension of £200, and the degree of LL.D. from Oxford. James Hay Beattie (6 November 1768 – 19 November 1790) was a Scottish scholar, the son of Dr. James Beattie, author of the ''Minstrel''. Life He was born in Aberdeen on 6 November 1768. Having received the rudiments of his education at the grammar school of his native city, he was entered, in his thirteenth year, as a student in Marischal College. James Herries Beattie (6 June 1881 – 11 May 1972) was a New Zealand bookkeeper, journalist, historian, ethnologist and bookseller. He was born in Gore, New Zealand on 6 June 1881. Biography James Herries Beattie (known as Herries) was the son of Scottish immigrants James Beattie and Mary Roden (Rodden) Thomson, who arrived in Otago in 1862 and were married in 1874. After some years of farming, James Beattie opened a drapery business in Gore, where he became a well-known figure and was mayor for four terms. Herries was born in Gore on 6 June 1881. He was one of nine children, four of whom died young. The family was deeply religious, Presbyterian at first and Congregational from 1892.
