James Beane
Lieutenant James Dudley Beane (January 20, 1896 – October 30, 1918) was a World War I flying ace credited with six aerial victories. Biography He was born on January 20, 1896. Beane attended Concord High School. He was employed in Boston before joining the Ambulance Service. He spent a year's duty on the Verdun front, from July 1916 though July 1917. He volunteered for aviation and trained with the Lafayette Escadrille. He was then assigned to Escadrille 69. In February 1918, he took a commission with American aviation but maintained his status with Escadrille 69 for a while. He then transferred into the 22nd Aero Squadron. Between September 26 and 29 October 18, he scored six aerial victories, though he shared one with Arthur Raymond Brooks and Clinton Jones, and another with Remington Vernam. Lafayette Escadrille
The La Fayette Escadrille (french: Escadrille de La Fayette) was the name of the French Air Force unit escadrille N 124 during the First World War (1914–1918). This escadrille of the ''Aéronautique Militaire'' was composed largely of American volunteer pilots flying fighters. It was named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, French hero of the American Revolutionary War. In September 1917, the escadrille was transferred to the US Army under the designation 103rd Aero Squadron. The following is a list of flying aces from the United States of America who served in World War I Overview Even before the United States entry into World War I in April 1917, many Americans volunteered to serve in the armed forces of Great Britain and France. Many eventually found their ways into the Royal Flying Corps and ''Aéronautique Militaire'' (French Air Service). The British integrated the Americans into their existing squadrons, while the French set up separate American squadrons such as the Lafayette Escadrille and then the Lafayette Flying Corps, as well as integrated the pilots into existing squadrons. Remington Vernam (World War I Flying Ace)
Lieutenant Remington D. B. Vernam (March 24, 1896 - December 1, 1918) was an American pilot who had enlisted in the French air service during World War I, and was transferred to the United States Army Air Service after American entry into the war. He attained ace status when he shot down three enemy observation balloons and three enemy planes. He shared his first victory, a balloon on 12 August 1918, with Charles Lefevre while with Escadrille 96. His remaining five victories were scored between 10 and 30 October 1918 while flying with the 22nd Aero Squadron. Vernam was shot down behind German lines on October 30, 1918, aged 22, later dying from his wounds. He is buried in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery in France. Lieutenant Clinton Leonard Jones, Jr. was an American World War I flying ace credited with eight aerial victories. Clinton Jones was a late arrival to World War I, arriving at the 22nd Aero Squadron on 27 August 1918. However, from 4 September through 30 October, Jones scored eight victories; five solo, and three shared with Jacques Swaab, James Beane, Arthur Raymond Brooks, and F. D. Tyndall. Arthur Raymond Brooks
Arthur Raymond Brooks (1 November 1895 – 17 July 1991) was an American World War I flying ace of the United States Army Air Service credited with shooting down multiple enemy aircraft. Among his most prominent achievements was when he single-handedly took on a squadron of German-flown Fokker (Dutch make) planes officially downing 2 of them in one aerial battle piloting his Smith IV Spad XIII. He was a pioneer in the development of radio navigational aids (NAVAIDs) used by pilots for location and navigation as well as air-to-ground communications. Brooks also participated in early endeavors to commercialize aviation as a passenger-carrying business and was one of the earliest commercial pilots involved with carrying mail (air mail) for the US Post Office Department.
