James Bateman (horticulturist)
James Bateman (18 July 1811 – 27 November 1897) was a British landowner and accomplished horticulturist. He developed Biddulph Grange after moving there around 1840, from nearby Knypersley Hall in Staffordshire, England. He created the famous gardens at Biddulph with the aid of his wife Maria and his friend and painter of seascapes Edward William Cooke. From 1865–70 he was the founding president of the North Staffordshire Field Club, the large local club which to this day researches local natural history and folklore. Biography He was born at Redvales near Bury in Lancashire, he matriculated with Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1829, graduating from Magdalen College with a BA in 1834 and an MA in 1845. Over the twenty years he made a great deal of money in iron, engineering and banking. James Bateman (artist)
James Bateman (22 March 1893 – 2 August 1959) was an English painter and engraver specialising in agricultural topics, rural subjects and pastoral landscapes. Life and work Bateman was born in Kendal, the son of a blacksmith. During World War One he served with the Northumberland Fusiliers, the Machine Gun Corps and, from 1916, with the Artists Rifles. Although he had studied sculpture at Leeds School of Art from 1910 to 1914, and won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, a serious war-time injury caused by a gunshot wound to the spine and lungs, led him to concentrate on painting, as it would be less physically demanding. Bateman studied at the Slade School of Art between 1919 and 1921, and was a Rome Scholarship finalist in 1920. After the Slade, Bateman taught art, first at the Cheltenham Art College, then the Hammersmith School of Art and, in 1929, at Goldsmiths College. Sir James Bateman (29 April 1660''London, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538–1812'' – 10 November 1718) was an English merchant and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1711 to 1718. He became Lord Mayor of London and Governor of the Bank of England. Early years Bateman was the son of Joas (anglicised to Joseph) Bateman of Tooting and his second wife, Judith de la Barre, daughter of John de la Barre, merchant, of Fenchurch Street. He was born and baptised the same day at St Martin Orgar in London. His father was a Flemish immigrant who had become a successful London merchant and alderman.
