James Barss
James Barss (1782 – November 24, 1863) was a ship owner, sea captain, merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Liverpool township in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1830 to 1836. He was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, probably on February 2, 1783, the son of Joseph Barss and Elizabeth Crowell. In 1806, Barss married Elizabeth Collins. He died in Liverpool. His brother John also served in the assembly. His brother Joseph Joseph is a common male given name, derived from the Hebrew Yosef (יוֹסֵף). Liverpool is a Canadian community and former town located along the Atlantic Ocean of the Province of Nova Scotia's South Shore. Joseph Barss (politician)
Joseph Barss (1750 – August 13, 1826) was a mariner, merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Liverpool Township in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1799 to 1811. He was the son of Joseph Barss and Lydia Dean and came to Liverpool, Nova Scotia from New England in 1761. In 1773, he married Elizabeth Crowell. Barss was a justice of the peace and judge in the Inferior Court of Common Pleas. He died in Liverpool. John Barss
John Barss (14 September 1778 – 12 May 1851) was from a large family in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, the son of Joseph Barss and Elizabeth Crowell. His early training was on his father's ships and he became an expert ship's captain with an intimate knowledge of the trade and the seas from Labrador to the West Indies. Barss's trade involved the usual fare which centered on items such as fish, rum, sugar, lumber, coffee, etc. He lost his ship in 1811 to a French brig in the West Indies and turned to a career as a merchant. During the War of 1812, he was a shareholder in several privateers including one commanded by his brother Joseph. The involvement with privateers was considered acceptable during that time in Nova Scotia history. Joseph Barss
Joseph Barss (21 February 1776 – 3 August 1824) was a sea Captain (nautical), captain of the schooner ''Liverpool Packet'' and was one of the most successful privateers on the North American Atlantic coast during the War of 1812. Background Born 21 February 1776 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia to the son of sea captain Joseph Barss (politician), Joseph Barss Sr. and Elizabeth Crowell. Barss' parents had married in 1773. They were one of the first families to settle in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Barss was the second of fourteen children. In 1798 the Barss family built one of the largest homes in Liverpool. The house still stands today and is part of the Lane's Privateer Inn.
