James B. Stephenson
James Bennett Stephenson (January 26, 1916 – June 21, 2005) was a justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court from 1976 to 1988. Biography Early life, education, and military service Stephenson was born January 26, 1916, in Greenup County, Kentucky, to judge and Democratic state senator E. D. Stephenson and Emabel Bennett Stephenson. He attended the University of Kentucky where he obtained a bachelor's in 1938, and then a law degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1940. His grandfather Joseph B. Bennett had been a Republican congressman and his great-grandfather B. F. Bennett was a delegate at the 1890 Kentucky constitutional convention. He was admitted to the bar in Kentucky in 1939 and practiced law in Pike County, Kentucky. Stephenson served during World War II as a captain in the United States Army Air Corps also serving as a court martial trial judge and intelligence officer. Kentucky Court Of Appeals
The Kentucky Court of Appeals is the lower of Kentucky's two appellate courts, under the Kentucky Supreme Court. Prior to a 1975 amendment to the Kentucky Constitution the Kentucky Court of Appeals was the only appellate court in Kentucky. The Court of Appeals has 14 members. Two members are elected from each of seven districts and serve eight-year terms of office. The Kentucky Court of Appeals judges are elected from districts that mirror the seven districts which elect the seven justices of the Supreme Court of Kentucky. The 14 judges select one colleague to serve as chief judge for a four-year term. The chief judge assigns judges and cases to panels. The current chief judge is Denise G. Clayton. The court usually sits in three judge panels. Membership of the panels rotate so that all judges sit on at least one panel with each of their colleagues in any given year. Perry County is a county in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,473. Its county seat is Hazard. The county was founded in 1820. Both the county and county seat are named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a naval hero in the War of 1812. History The area presently bounded by Kentucky state lines was a part of the U.S. State of Virginia, known as Kentucky County when the British colonies separated themselves in the American Revolutionary War.
