James B. Carden House
James B. Carden House is a historic home located near Summersville, West Virginia, Summersville, Nicholas County, West Virginia. It was built in 1885, and is a two-story, "T"-plan, frame, Folk Victorian style house. It features a two-story front porch running the full width of the house. Also on the property are an end gable barn and a small workshop. It has been occupied since 1971, by a restaurant known as the Country Road Inn-Mama Jerrols. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Summersville, West Virginia
Summersville is a city in Nicholas County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,459 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Nicholas County. History Summersville was laid out in 1824. The city was named for Lewis Summers, a local judge who had introduced the bill to create Nicholas County. Summersville was home to both Union and Confederate encampments during the Civil War. The town was mostly burned down by the Confederate spy, Nancy Hart Douglas, during the war. The town was rebuilt by 1884. In 1914, Nicholas County High School was established, then located downtown in the "Old Main". More buildings were built on the campus to house the growing student body until a new building north of town was finished in 1978. Construction on Summersville Dam began in 1960 and was finished and dedicated by President Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1966. Nicholas County is a county located in the central region of U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,604. Its county seat is Summersville. The county was created in 1818 by the Virginia General Assembly and named for Virginia Governor Wilson Cary Nicholas. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (1.2%) is water. In 1863, West Virginia's counties were divided into civil townships, with the intention of encouraging local government. This proved impractical in the heavily rural state, and in 1872 the townships were converted into magisterial districts. Nicholas County was divided into six districts: Grant, Jefferson, Kentucky, Mumble-the-peg, Summersville, and Wilderness. In 1873, Mumble-the-peg became Hamilton District. Folk Victorian is an architectural style employed for some homes in the United States and Europe between 1870 and 1910, though isolated examples continued to be built well into the 1930s.
