Jamaica At The 2009 World Championships In Athletics
Jamaica competed at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics from 15–23 August. A team of 46 athletes was announced in preparation for the competition. Selected athletes achieved one of the competition's qualifying standards. The squad had a number of medal hopes for the sprinting events, including Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, and Michael Frater in the men's and Veronica Campbell-Brown, Kerron Stewart, and Shelly-Ann Fraser in the women's. Olympic gold medallist Melaine Walker competed in the 400 metres hurdles and 2007 World Championship silver medallists Maurice Smith, Shericka Williams, and Novlene Williams-Mills also feature. Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association
The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) is the national governing body for the sport of athletics (including track and field, long-distance running and racewalking) in Jamaica. The association is based in Kingston. As of December 2020, the president of the association is Garth Gayle, JP. He succeeded Dr. Warren Blake who was elected interim president in November 2011 after the sudden death of Blake's predecessor Howard Aris, and re-elected in November 2012. The objects of the association are to promote, develop and regulate amateur athletics in Jamaica. The JAAA aims to provide instruction and teaching of athletics to teachers, coaches, instructors and athletes. It organises competitions and events in Jamaica whilst laying down rules and regulations and providing rewards to winners. Shericka Williams
Shericka Williams (born 17 September 1985 in Black River, St. Elizabeth) is a Jamaican former sprinter. Together with Novlene Williams, Ronetta Smith and Lorraine Fenton she won a silver medal in 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. She also competed in the individual contest, but was knocked out in the semifinal. Two years later, she won another silver medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay event at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics, this time with Shereefa Lloyd, Davita Prendagast and Novlene Williams. The team set a national record in that race, finishing second to the United States in a time of 3:19.73. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, Williams won the silver medal in the 400 metres in a personal-best time of 49.39 seconds. Steve Mullings
Steve Mullings (born 28 November 1982) is a Jamaican former sprint athlete who specialized in the 100 and 200 metres events. In 2011 he was given a lifetime ban for doping. Career Mullings began his international athletics career with a bronze medal win in the 100 m at the Pan American Junior Championships. At the 2004 national championship he made his first impact in senior athletics, setting new bests of 10.04 and 20.22 in the sprints, and finishing as the 200 m national champion. This earned him qualification into the 2004 Summer Olympics, but he was withdrawn from the competition after his sample from the national championships tested positive for banned substances. 100 Metres
The 100 metres, or 100-meter dash, is a sprint race in track and field competitions. The shortest common outdoor running distance, the dash is one of the most popular and prestigious events in the sport of athletics. It has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1928 for women. The inaugural World Championships were in 1983. Lamine Diack
Lamine Diack (7 June 1933 – 3 December 2021) was a Senegalese businessman, sports administrator, and athlete. He was president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) from 1999 to 2015. He was the subject of numerous investigations into corruption during his tenure as president. He was also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1999 to 2013, then an honorary member from 2014 to 2015, and the chairman of the National Water Company "Société Nationale des Eaux" of Senegal (SONES) from 1995 to 2001. Brigitte Foster-Hylton
Brigitte Foster-Hylton OD (born 7 November 1974 in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica) is a Jamaican 100m hurdler. She was the World Champion over 100m hurdles in 2009. Like fellow Jamaican hurdler Delloreen Ennis-London she was not a successful hurdler until 2000, when she lowered her personal best by 65/100. Having improved greatly, she finished eighth at the 2000 Olympics. At Athens 2004 she pulled out of the semi-finals. Foster-Hylton won the silver medal at the 2003 World Championships and the bronze medal at the 2005 World Championships. At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing Foster-Hylton finished sixth in the final, but was only two-hundredths of a second behind the silver medallist. Foster-Hylton's greatest achievement came in 2009 when she became World Champion at 100 metres hurdles at the World Championships in Berlin. Sheri-Ann Brooks
Sheri-Ann Brooks (born 11 February 1983 in Kingston) is a Jamaican sprinter, who specializes in the 100 metres. She is the first child of Mr. Error Brooks and Mrs. Donna Brooks. Brooks represented the Jamaica at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She competed at the 4 x 100 metres relay together with Shelly-Ann Fraser, Aleen Bailey and Veronica Campbell-Brown. In its first round heat, Jamaica placed first in front of Russia, Germany and China. The Jamaica relay's time of 42.24 seconds was the first time overall out of sixteen participating nations. Marvin Anderson
Marvin Anderson (born 12 May 1982) is a Jamaican sprint athlete. He finished sixth in the 200m final at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka where he also won a silver medal in the 4 × 100 m relay team for Jamaica. He is a former student of Duncans All Age and William Knibb Memorial High School. Anderson represented Jamaica at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He competed at the 200 metres and placed third in his first round heat after Marlon Devonish and Kim Collins in a time of 20.85 seconds. Lansford Spence (born 15 December 1982) is a Jamaican sprinter. Together with Sanjay Ayre, Brandon Simpson and Davian Clarke he won a bronze medal in 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. He also competed in the individual contest, but was knocked out in the semi final. In 2006 the relay team won another bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games. He won a Commonwealth Games Silver medal in the 200m in 2010. He was one of five athletes (along with Yohan Blake, Marvin Anderson, Allodin Fothergill and Sheri-Ann Brooks) who failed their doping tests at the 2009 Jamaican National Championships.
