Jalan Boon Lay
Jalan Boon Lay () is a major road in Jurong West, Singapore. Travelling in a north-south direction, Jalan Boon Lay connects the junctions of Jurong West Avenue 4, Jurong West Avenue 2 and Jalan Bahar in the north with the junctions of Jurong Pier Road, Jurong Hill Flyover, Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim and Ayer Rajah Expressway in the south. Etymology and history The road was previously known as "Boon Lay Road" in the 1950s. It was named after Chew Boon Lay (), one of Singapore's early pioneers and a successful businessman. The land in which Jalan Boon Lay and its adjacent areas once belonged to Chew and it was acquired by the colonial government sometime in the late 1940s and 1950s. During the 1960s, when Singapore became a state of Malaysia, it used the prefix ''"Jalan"'' and many other Malay roads were paved in the area as industrialization grew, including "Jalan Pabrik" (Renamed to ''"Jurong Port Road"'') and "Jalan Utasan" (Renamed to ''"International Road"''). Jurong West
Jurong West is a planning area and residential town located in the West Region of Singapore. Jurong West shares boundaries with Tengah in the north, Jurong East in the east, Boon Lay and Pioneer in the south, and Western Water Catchment in the west. Originally a forested area, Jurong West is undergoing rapid development under the ambition of the Housing and Development Board (HDB) to transform it into a fully mature housing estate. History Jurong West originated from the area once called Peng Kang, named after the gambier plantations along Sungei Jurong. Jurong West Avenue 2
Jurong () is a major geographical region located at the south-westernmost point of the West Region of Singapore. Although mostly vaguely defined, the region's extent roughly covers the planning areas of Jurong East, Jurong West, Boon Lay, and Pioneer, along with Jurong Island in the Western Islands cluster and the southernmost portions of the Western Water Catchment. Should it be described at its greatest historical extent, the region can also include present-day Bukit Batok and Tuas. Jurong also covers several offshore islands as well, including Pulau Damar Laut and Pulau Samulun, both of which are located within the planning areas of Jurong East and Boon Lay respectively; along with the aforementioned Jurong Island. Jalan Bahar
Jalan Bahar () is a major arterial road from Lim Chu Kang Road to Jurong West Avenue 2; originally a Jurong Road/Lim Chu Kang Road link. It was opened on 9 April 1965 to connect the rural areas of Lim Chu Kang to the Jurong Industrial Estate. It also connects through the Pan Island Expressway. Jalan Bahar is located at the western part of Singapore , and is in close proximity to Tuas and Lim Chu Kang districts. A large portion of Jalan Bahar's land area is restricted and designated for the Singapore Armed Forces' live firing exercises and the Singapore Civil Defence' Basic Rescue Training exercises. Primarily a wooded, forested area, the land at Jalan Bahar has been cleared over the years and is left undeveloped till today. Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim
Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim () is a road located in Boon Lay, Singapore. Named after Singaporean politician Ahmad Ibrahim, the road links Ayer Rajah Expressway with Jurong Hill Flyover. History Built in 1961, it was the first road to be built as an expansion into Jurong, conceived at that time to be an industrial area. After the passing of Ahmad Ibrahim, the road was named after him in his honor after being completed in 1965. Ayer Rajah Expressway
The Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) extends from the western end of the Marina Coastal Expressway in the south of Singapore to Tuas in the west near the Tuas Second Link to Malaysia. Together with the Marina Coastal Expressway and the East Coast Parkway, it forms a second east-west link to complement the role played by the Pan Island Expressway. As from 29 December 2013, ECP and AYE are no longer linked together after MCE was opened. History Construction on the expressway commenced in 1983, with the first two phases completed by 1988. Chew Boon Lay
Chewing or mastication is the process by which food is crushed and ground by teeth. It is the first step of digestion, and it increases the surface area of foods to allow a more efficient break down by enzymes. During the mastication process, the food is positioned by the cheek and tongue between the teeth for grinding. The muscles of mastication move the jaws to bring the teeth into intermittent contact, repeatedly occluding and opening. As chewing continues, the food is made softer and warmer, and the enzymes in saliva begin to break down carbohydrates in the food. After chewing, the food (now called a bolus) is swallowed. Boon Lay Place
Boon Lay (, ta, பூன் லே) is a neighbourhood located in the town of Jurong West in the West Region of Singapore. Its borders very roughly correspond to the URA subzone of Boon Lay Place, situated within the Jurong West Planning Area. The subzone was named after Chew Boon Lay (), a prominent businessman in the late 19th century and early 20th century who owned the land where the precinct stands. When a requisition of of land from his estate was done by the war department of the then colonial government of Singapore, it led to the growth of Boon Lay Village in the 1940s, with a population of about 420 in the early 1960s. Boon Lay Place had earthworks begun in 1969 and had their HDB flats built since 1974. The subzone is a division of West Coast GRC, under the management of West Coast Town Council.
