Jakob Jensen (politician)
Jakob Jensen (15 November 1858 – 5 October 1942) was a Danish politician and the first elected mayor of Aarhus, Denmark. Jakob Jensen was born in Helgenæs on Djursland where he grew up on the family farm but he later moved to Aarhus where he worked as a mason and later as a politician. He founded the local mason's union, was involved in numerous organizations and during his tenure as mayor he was instrumental in expanding the Port of Aarhus and getting the University of Aarhus established. Jakob Jensen was a member of the Danish Social Democratic Party. Public service In the 1880s he became involved in the Social Democratic worker's movements in 1883 he helped establish Murernes Fagforening (Mason's Union) and from 1887 he functioned as the president of it. From 1894 he functioned as the spokesperson of business matters for Arbejdernes Forbrugsforening (Worker's Union of Consumers). Helgenæs
Helgenæs is a peninsula, approximately twenty square kilometres in size, stretching out from Mols in Denmark. Mols is itself part of the large peninsula of Djursland, in the middle of the Kattegat sea between Denmark and Sweden. West of Helgenæs, 16 kilometres across the Bay of Aarhus, lies Aarhus, the second-largest city in Denmark. Ten kilometres to the east is the small coastal town of Ebeltoft, with a well-developed tourism industry comprising marinas and summer rentals in the surrounding countryside, including Helgenæs. Five kilometres to the northwest is Skødshoved, another minor peninsula of Mols. Villages on Helgenæs are Kongsgårde, Borup and Fejrup. Just north of Helgenæs is the large recently inaugurated Mols Bjerge National Park, comprising most of the entire Djursland region. Julius Paulsen
Julius Paulsen (22 October 1860 in Odense – 17 February 1940 in Copenhagen) was a Danish painter. From 1879 to 1882 he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts where he was later a professor. He had strong connections with several of the Skagen Painters and visited Skagen in the early 1900s. Paulsen was influenced by Rembrandt and French salon art. He is remembered above all for his portraits. Early life and education Born in Odense, Paulsen was the son of a shopkeeper. After completing an apprenticeship as a house painter, he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1882. Aarhus City Hall
Aarhus City Hall is the city hall of Aarhus, Denmark. The decision to build a new city hall was taken during a city hall meeting in 1937. The new building was inaugurated 2 June 1941, designed by architects Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller. On the first proposal, the plans did not include a tower but due to massive public pressure it was later added to the drawings along with the idea to clad the structure in marble. Hans Wegner was in charge of the furnishing - which is uniquely designed to fit the building -, and parts of the interior design. Architecture and design The city hall has a total area of 19,380 m2 including the basement. The tower is 60 m tall and the tower clock face has a diameter of 7 m. The building is made of concrete plated with 6,000 m2 of grey marble from Porsgrunn in Norway. Vester Allé 12 is a listed building in Aarhus, Denmark. The building was completed in 1902 and was listed by the Danish Heritage Agency in the Danish registry of protected buildings and places on 5 April 1988. The building is situated on the west side of ''Vester Allé'' close by Vester Allé Barracks and ARoS Aarhus Art Museum. The building has been home to some of the earliest cultural institutions in the city. Colloquially the building is known as ''Smykkeskrinet'' (The Jewel Box) for its distinctive shape or as ''Erhvervsarkivet'' (The Business Archive) for its long tenure as the home of the Danish National Business Archives.
