Jake Verity
Jake Shaw Verity (born December 23, 1997) is an American football placekicker who is a free agent. He played college football at East Carolina and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Baltimore Ravens in 2021. Early life Verity attended Bremen High School in Georgia, where he was credited with a 63-yard field goal on a fair catch kick, the third-longest field goal in Georgia High School Association history. College career Verity attended East Carolina University and played for the East Carolina Pirates football team. At East Carolina, he was a two-time All-American Athletic Conference selection, a semi-finalist for the Lou Groza Award in 2019, an award given to the top placekicker in college football, and was East Carolina's all-time leading scorer by the time his collegiate career finished. Placekicker
Placekicker, or simply kicker (PK or K), is the player in gridiron football who is responsible for the kicking duties of field goals and extra points. In many cases, the placekicker also serves as the team's kickoff specialist or punter. Specialized role The kicker initially was not a specialized role. Prior to the 1934 standardization of the prolate spheroid shape of the ball, drop kicking was the prevalent method of kicking field goals and conversions, but even after its replacement by place kicking, until the 1960s the kicker almost always doubled at another position on the roster. Fair Catch Kick
The fair catch kick is a rule at the professional and high school levels of American football that allows a team that has just made a fair catch to attempt a free kick from the spot of the catch. The kick must be either a place kick or a drop kick, and if it passes over the crossbar and between the goalposts of the opposing team's goal, a field goal, worth three points, is awarded to the kicking team. The fair catch kick is considered to be an obscure rule and it is rarely attempted. Because most fair catches are made well out of field goal range, and a team making a fair catch has possession of the ball and a first down, it is rarely to a team's advantage to attempt a fair catch kick rather than run a play from scrimmage. 2021 NFL Draft
The 2021 NFL Draft was the 86th National Football League Draft, the annual meeting of National Football League (NFL) franchises to select newly eligible players for the 2021 NFL season. The draft was held in Cleveland from April 29 to May 1, 2021. Five quarterbacks were selected in the first round — Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones — the second highest number of first-round quarterback selections (along with the 1999 and 2018 drafts) after the six selected in 1983. The Lou Groza Award is presented annually to the top college football placekicker in the United States by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
