Jake Josvanger
Jake H. Josvanger (December 22, 1908 – June 30, 1966) was a former provincial and municipal level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1955 to 1959 sitting with the Liberal caucus in opposition. He was also a municipal councilor for the Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87. Political career Josvanger ran for a seat to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in the provincial election as a candidate for the Liberals. He won the Bonnyville electoral district defeating two other candidates with just over 50% of the popular vote. He was elected later that year as a municipal councilor for the Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87 in the first election held after its creation in 1955. Josvanger would serve both political posts. Josvanger ran for a second term in provincial office in the 1959 Alberta general election. Bonnyville (provincial Electoral District)
Bonnyville was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1952 to 1997. The Bonnyville electoral district was created in 1952 from the northern part of the St. Paul electoral district. In 1997 the riding was renamed Bonnyville-Cold Lake, to more accurately reflect the two largest population centres in the constituency. Representation history The new district was won by former United Farmers MLA for St. Paul, Laudas Joly, running as a Social Credit candidate. Upon his retirement in 1955, the riding would be won by Jake Josvanger, as part of the Liberal Party's brief revival under James Harper Prowse. Social Credit would re-take Bonnyville in 1959, but new MLA Karl Nordstrom died in office in 1961, triggering a by-election later that year. Laudas Joly
Laudas Joly (August 6, 1887 – April 30, 1960) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1921 to 1930 as a member of the United Farmers of Alberta and from 1952 to 1955 as a member of the Social Credit Party. Political career Joly first ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature as a United Farmers candidate in the 1921 general election. He defeated incumbent Prosper-Edmond Lessard in the electoral district of St. Paul to pick up the seat for his party. He was re-elected in the 1926 general election. Joly was defeated in the 1930 general election by Liberal candidate Joseph Dechene by just 18 votes . Karl Earnest Nordstrom (July 1, 1920 – October 10, 1961) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1959 until his death in 1961 sitting with the Social Credit caucus in government. Political career Nordstrom ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1959 Alberta general election as a Social Credit candidate in the Bonnyville electoral district. He defeated incumbent Liberal MLA Jake Josvanger and another candidate with a solid majority to pick up the seat for his party. After the election Nordstrom's health started failing. 1955 Alberta General Election
The 1955 Alberta general election was held on June 29, 1955, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Despite losing almost 10% of the popular vote (compared to its 1952 proportion of the vote) and 30% of its seats in the legislature, the Social Credit Party, led by Ernest C. Manning, received a slightly higher number of votes than in 1952 and won a comfortable majority for its sixth term in government. The Liberal Party emerged as the principal opposition to the Social Credit juggernaut, winning over 30% of the popular vote, and increasing its legislative caucus from 4 members to 15.
