The Jake Award is an annual award presented to North American short line ( Class III) railroads by rail transport industry group ''American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association''. Brandywine Valley Railroad
The Brandywine Valley Railroad is a class III railroad operating in Pennsylvania. It was established in 1981 by the Lukens Steel Company to operate trackage at Coatesville, Pennsylvania and the neighboring town of Modena. It was acquired, with the rest of the Lukens properties, by Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1998. The Brandywine Valley's main line was originally built by the Wilmington and Northern Railroad, largely following the Brandywine Creek, to connect Reading with Wilmington, Delaware. By the time of the Brandywine Valley's formation, the line had been abandoned north of Valley Station, just north of Coatesville. BVRY took over the line from this point, the site of an interchange with Amtrak's Keystone Corridor, south to Modena, below which the ex-W&N was owned by PennDOT and operated by a number of shortlines over the years. Escanaba And Lake Superior Railroad
The Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad is a Class III shortline railroad that operates of track in Northeastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Its main line runs from Rockland, Michigan, to Green Bay, Wisconsin, and it also owns various branch lines and out-of-service track. In 1897, the Escanaba River Company built a railroad from Wells, Michigan to tap a large hardwood timber stand at LaFave’s Hill. Elgin, Joliet And Eastern Railway
The Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway was a Class I railroad, operating between Waukegan, Illinois and Gary, Indiana. The railroad served as a link between Class I railroads traveling to and from Chicago, although it operated almost entirely within the city's suburbs, and only entered Chicago where it served the U.S. Steel South Works on the shores of Lake Michigan. Nicknames for the railroad included "The J" and "The Chicago Outer Belt Line". At the end of 1970, the EJ&E operated 164 miles of track and carried 848 million ton-miles of revenue freight in that year alone. On September 26, 2007, the Canadian National Railway announced that it planned to purchase a majority of the EJ&E, leaving a portion of the line in Indiana to be reorganized as the Gary Railway. Eastern Illinois Railroad
The Eastern Illinois Railroad (EIRC) was a Class III, 53-mile shortline railroad that ran from Neoga, Illinois, to Metcalf, Illinois, with headquarters in Charleston, Illinois. The railroad hauled grain and lumber. There were 4 locomotives in operation on the EIRC when operations ceased, two they owned and two that were leased. The East Camden and Highland Railroad is a Class III short-line railroad headquartered in East Camden, Arkansas. EACH operates a 47.6 mile (76.6 km) line in Arkansas from East Camden to Eagle Mills (where it interchanges with Union Pacific Railroad). Corpus Christi Terminal Railroad
The Corpus Christi Terminal Railroad was a terminal railroad originally created in 1924 to facilitate heavy bulk freight cargo traffic flow from the recently completed deep water port channel of the new Corpus Christi Port. Wishing to maximize freight handling potential while holding down rates, the Port Authority decided to allow traffic to all of its docks and facilities by no less than three competing railroads, the Southern Pacific, the Missouri Pacific and the Texas Mexican, Tex-Mex railroads. To accomplish this the Port of Corpus Christi Authority built its own trackage along the channel and to the docks, and allowed all three carriers access to it. While the Authority's scheme at first heightened tensions among the three railroads, they eventually began to cooperate, assuring a good flow of bulk freight and the eventual success of the Port facilities. Columbus And Ohio River Rail Road
The Columbus & Ohio River Railroad is a railroad in the U.S. state of Ohio owned by Genesee & Wyoming Inc. The main line, formerly part of the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Panhandle," was acquired from Conrail in 1992. It begins in Columbus along CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway tracks and stretches to Mingo Junction, Ohio near Steubenville on the Ohio River. It interchanges with CSX at Columbus, and Norfolk Southern at Columbus and Mingo Junction. The railroad also connects with Ohio Central Railroad in Coshocton, Ohio and Zanesville, Ohio. The Columbia and Cowlitz Railway is a short-line railroad owned by Patriot Rail Corporation, and is headquartered in Longview, Washington. The railroad serves an route from the Weyerhaeuser Company mill in Longview to the junction just outside the city limits of Kelso. Cloquet Terminal Railroad
Cloquet Terminal Railroad is a small Class 3 terminal railroad operating of track in Cloquet, Minnesota. The railroad interchanges with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Canadian Pacific railroads in Cloquet and services the Sappi Paper Mill, a USG Ceiling Tile plant and a SMI Plant on the mill site. The railroad's shop and offices are located on Dunlap Island in the St. Louis River. The railroad owns 160 freight cars. In 2004, the railroad handled 6,000 railroad cars. Cloquet Terminal Railroad is owned by the Sappi Paper Mill and took over the operations of the Duluth and Northeastern Railroad on May 13, 2002.
