Jaime Rios (boxer)
Jaime Rios, (August 14, 1953 – March 20, 2019) was a Panamanian former professional boxer from 1973–1992. His professional record is 22–5–1 and he held the inaugural title of WBA Light Flyweight champion between 1975–1976. Light Flyweight
Light flyweight, also known as junior flyweight or super strawweight, is a weight class in boxing. Professional boxing The weight limit at light flyweight in professional boxing is 108 pounds (49 kilograms). When New York legalized boxing in 1920, the law stipulated a "junior flyweight" class, with a weight limit of 99 pounds. When the National Boxing Association was formed in 1921, it also recognized this weight class. However, on January 19, 1922, the NBA decided to withdraw recognition of the junior flyweight division. On December 31, 1929, the New York State Athletic Commission also abolished the junior flyweight class. No champion had been crowned in this division prior to its abolition. The World Boxing Council (WBC) decided to resurrect this division in the 1970s. The first champion in this division was Franco Udella, who won the WBC title in 1975. Orthodox (boxing)
In Combat sport, combat sports such as boxing, an orthodox stance is one in which the boxer places their left foot farther in front of the right foot, thus having their weaker side closer to the opponent. Because it favors the stronger, dominant side (often the right side; see laterality), the orthodox stance is the most common stance in boxing and MMA. It is mostly used by right-handed boxers. Many boxing champions have fought in an orthodox stance. Alternative stances The corresponding designation for a left-handed boxer is Southpaw stance, southpaw and is generally a mirror image of the orthodox stance. The World Boxing Association (WBA), formerly known as the National Boxing Association (NBA), is the oldest and one of four major organizations which sanction professional boxing bouts, alongside the World Boxing Council (WBC), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO). The WBA awards its world championship title at the professional level. Yoko Gushiken
is a Japanese former professional boxer who competed from 1974 to 1981. He held the WBA light-flyweight title from 1976 to 1981, making a total of 13 successful defences. Following his retirement from boxing, he remains popular in Japan as a ''tarento'' having signed a contract with Ohta Production. He is well known in Japan for his comical trademark looks of perm afro hair style. Gushiken was inducted in 2015 to the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Biography Gushiken was known for having strong stamina, allowing him to pressure opponents into mistakes after many rounds. His southpaw stance allowed him to take advantage of many mistakes, usually by throwing unexpected combinations of punches instead of waiting for counterpunch opportunities. Juan Guzman (boxer)
Juan Antonio Guzmán Batista (August 21, 1951 — May 2021), better known as Juan Guzman, was a Dominican former professional boxer and WBA world Junior Flyweight champion. Due to his high percentage of wins by knockout (specially for his division, the 108 pounds limit division), he was nicknamed "El Pequeno Foreman" ("Little Foreman", after George Foreman). Guzman was born in Santiago de los Caballeros, during the Rafael Trujillo dictatorship era. Lupe Madera
Lupe Madera (December 17, 1952 – December 3, 2005) was a Mexican professional boxer. He held the title of World Boxing Association (WBA) world junior flyweight champion from 1983 to 1984. Career Lupe Madera was born in Sotuta, Yucatán, Mexico. He turned pro in 1972 and was considered a journeyman for most of his career. In 1982, he was granted a shot at WBA light flyweight title holder Katsuo Tokashiki, but lost a split decision. The following year they fought a rematch, and the fight was ruled a draw. Three months later, they fought again, with Madera winning a technical decision after four rounds and capturing the title.
