Jaff (tribe)
Jaff ( ku, جاف; also ''Jahf'', ''Jaaf'', ''Jaf'', ''Caf'') is the largest Kurdish tribe also known as clan, living in the borderlands of Iran and Iraq. Their heartland is between Sulaymaniyah to Sanandaj. The tribe predominantly adheres to the Shafi'i school with many Naqshbandi and Qadiriyya followers. It originated in the year 1114 by Zaher Beg Jaff, other important leaders were Mohamed Pasha Jaff, Lady Adela, Osman Pasha Jaff and Mahmud Pasha Jaff, their ancestral home is Sherwana Castle. The Ottoman Empire bestowed on them the name Pasha, a noble title, in the 1700s. They are the biggest Kurdish tribe in the Middle East with approximately 4 million people and they speak Babani Sorani. They ruled the Ardalan Principality until the 1860s. Mohamed Pasha Jaff
Mohamed Pasha Jaff, was born in 1714 and was considered the supreme leader of the Jaff tribe. The Sherwana Castle was built by him. The Jaff dialect (called Jaffi) is part of Sorani, a south-southeastern branch of Kurdish language family. The region inhabited by this tribe is southwest of Sanandaj all the way to Javanroud, and also areas around the city of Sulaimaniyah in Southern Kurdistan. History Mohamed Pasha Jaff received the noble title of Pasha by the Ottoman Empire. At 20 years old he settled in Sherwana Castle in Kalar region in Iraqi Kurdistan. Ravansar
Ravansar ( fa, روانسر; also Romanized as Ravānsar and Rawānsīr) is a city and capital of Ravansar County, Kermanshah Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 16,383, in 3,838 families. Archaeology and history Ravansar has important prehistoric and historical sites, and in this respect, it has a special place in the archaeology of the west of Iran. The earliest evidence of human habitation around Ravansar extends back to the Middle Paleolithic that continues to the end of the glacial period (at least from about 50,000 years to 12,000 years ago), whose remains were found in the caves of the Kulian and Jawri, as well as the Garab River (Awi Kher). Another important discovery in the region is an elephant molar tooth that dates back to the Pleistocene era and has been discovered near Rawansar. Khanai Qobadi
Khana Qubadi (, 1700–1759) was a Kurdish poet from the Jaff tribe who wrote in Gorani. He belonged to the Hawrami school of poetry in the Ardalan principality and lived in Derne which was the capital of Derteng, Hulwan and Bajelan dynasties which is located in modern-day Salas-e Babajani County. He first lived in Ardalan, but had to flee to neighboring Baban because of his translations of the Quran to Gorani. Hanna Jazmin Jaff Bosdet (born November 4, 1986) is an American-born Mexican television personality who runs the non-profit Jaff Foundation for Education. She has appeared in various media outlets and was part of the television series ''Made in Mexico''. Early life Hanna Jaff was born in San Diego, California. She is a paternal descendant of the Jaff tribe and a maternal descendant of Carlos Henry Bosdet. After completing high school from the University of San Diego High School, San Diego, Jaff completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the National University. Akram Hamid Begzadeh Jaff الدكتور اكرم حامد بك جاف (14 July 1929 – 21 November 2010) was a Kurdish leader who served in various posts in the Iraqi government and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Also known as "Al Jaff" or "Al-Jaff" in some literature & records. Mahmud Barzanji
Sheikh Mahmud Barzanji ( ku, شێخ مهحموود بەرزنجی) or Mahmud Hafid Zadeh (1878 – October 9, 1956) was a Kurdish leader of a series of Kurdish uprisings against the British Mandate of Iraq. He was sheikh of a Qadiriyah Sufi family of the Barzanji clan from the city of Sulaymaniyah, which is now in Iraqi Kurdistan. He was named King of Kurdistan during several of these uprisings. Background After World War I, the British and other Western powers occupied parts of the Ottoman Empire. Plans made with the French in the Sykes–Picot Agreement designated Britain as the mandate power. The British were able to form their own borders to their pleasure to gain an advantage in this region. Ely Bannister Soane
Ely Bannister Soane (1881–1923) was a British major, linguist, intelligence agent and writer who is best known for his travels around Kurdistan and Mesopotamia and works on Kurds. Life Soane was born in 1881 in Kensington and went to Bishop Latymer School and Latymer High School which he graduated from in 1898. He then worked at the Imperial Bank of Persia for a year and was afterwards sent to Persia where he travelled around Teheran, Shiraz, Bushehr and Yazd, where he learned the local languages and converted to Islam. In 1906, he started working for the Imperial Bank of Persia in Kermanshah until he returned to England in 1907. He then made a trip to Kurdistan and Mesopotamia in disguise as Mirza Gulam Hüseyin Şirazî and wrote his book "''To Mesopotamia and Kurdistan in disguise"'' containing his experiences during his travels which was published in 1910.
