Jacques Klein
Jacques Klein (10 July 1930 – 24 October 1982) was a Brazilian composer and pianist. Born to a Jewish family in Aracati, he grew up in the nearby city of Fortaleza, where he began to study piano at the Conservatorio Alberto Nepomuceno, which was founded by his father. At the beginning of the 1940s he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he studied with Liddy Mignone at the Conservatorio Brasileiro de Musica, where he himself began to teach in the 1950s. At the age of thirteen he temporarily left classical music and set up a jazz trio with his friends Dinarte Rodrigues (on guitar) and Breno Porto (on drums). The trio began to perform once a week on Radio Jornal do Brasil, starting in 1946. In 1948 Klein returned to classical music and studied with William Kapell in New York City and with Bruno Seidlhofer in Vienna. Aracati
Aracati () is a city or municipality in the state of Ceará, in the northeast region of Brazil. The city was officially founded on April 11, 1747. It is part of the microregion of Litoral de Aracati, which is one of the four microregions that make up the macroregion of Jaguaribe. Samba
Samba (), also known as samba urbano carioca (''urban Carioca samba'') or simply samba carioca (''Carioca samba''), is a Brazilian music genre that originated in the Afro-Brazilian communities of Rio de Janeiro in the early 20th century. Having its roots in Brazilian folk traditions, especially those linked to the primitive rural samba of the colonial and imperial periods, it is considered one of the most important cultural phenomena in Brazil and one of the country's symbols. Brazilian Jews
The history of the Jews in Brazil begins during the settlement of Europeans in the new world. Although only baptized Christians were subject to the Inquisition, Jews started settling in Brazil when the Inquisition reached Portugal, in the 16th century. They arrived in Brazil during the period of Dutch rule, setting up in Recife the first synagogue in the Americas, the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, as early as 1636. Most of those Jews were Sephardic Jews who had fled the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal to the religious freedom of the Netherlands. The Portuguese Inquisition expanded its scope of operations from Portugal to Portugal's colonial possessions, including Brazil, Cape Verde, and Goa, where it continued investigating and trying cases based on supposed breaches of orthodox Roman Catholicism until 1821. Arnaldo Cohen (Rio de Janeiro - 22 April 1948) is a Brazilian pianist. Biography Parallel to his piano studies, he also received degrees in Engineering and Violin from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and started his professional career as a violinist of the Rio de Janeiro Opera House Orchestra. Soon he decided to devote more time to playing piano and continued his studies with Jacques Klein, Bruno Seidlhofer and Dieter Weber. In 1972 he won the first prize of the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition. Clelia Iruzun
Clelia Iruzun is a Brazilian pianist based in London. Early life Clelia Iruzun was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She started playing by ear at the age of four years, subsequently beginning piano lessons with Maria Augusta Brasil da Silva and Dulce Vaz de Siqueira. From the age of seven she took part in several piano competitions and won many prizes. At 9 she entered the School of Music of the University of Rio de Janeiro where she studied with Anna Carolina Pereira da Silva and Arnaldo Cohen. From an early age she played for several pianists such as Jacques Klein and Nelson Freire and for composers Francisco Mignone and Arnaldo Rebello, both of whom dedicated works to Iruzun.
