Jacques Brel Metro Station
Jacques Brel is a Brussels Metro List of Brussels metro and premetro stations, station on the western branch of Brussels Metro line 5, line 5. It is located in the List of municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region, municipality of Anderlecht, in the western part of Brussels, Belgium. It is named after the Belgian singer, songwriter, and poet Jacques Brel. The station opened on 6 October 1982 as part of the Beekkant metro station, Beekkant–Saint-Guidon/Sint-Guido metro station, Saint Guidon/Sint-Guido extension of former line 1B. Following the reorganisation of the Brussels Metro on 4 April 2009, it is served by line 5. After the City of Brussels commissioned art projects to enhance the metro network, Maurice Wyckaert was appointed to decorate the station. Maurice Wyckaert
Maurice Wyckaert (1923–1996) was a Belgian artist born in Brussels. He is a neo-expressionistic, lyrical abstract painter, gouache designer and printmaker. He was educated at the Academy of Brussels (1940–47 and 1949–50) and in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and the Vrije Atelier of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. He debuted with wonderful expressionistic still life, reminiscent of Jean Brusselmans. Much early work dealt with stills of vegetables. Later Wyckaert became interested by William Turner and James Ensor and their ideas of luminism. In 1955 Wyckaert started to lyrically abstract interpret his environment, which contained noticeable influences of Eastern calligraphy. From this, he evolved to a dynamic abstract combination of attractive colors, which harmoniously shape a free interpretation of landscape. Saint-Guidon (French) or Sint Guido (Dutch) is a Brussels Metro station on the western branch of line 5. It is located in the municipality of Anderlecht, in the western part of Brussels, Belgium. The station opened on 6 October 1982 as part of the Beekkant–Saint Guidon extension of former line 1B. Prior to the opening of an extension to Veeweyde/Veeweide on 5 July 1985, the station was the western terminus of the metro. Beekkant Metro Station
Beekkant is a Brussels Metro station located in the municipality of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, in the western part of Brussels, Belgium. It opened on 8 May 1981 as part of the Sainte-Catherine/Sint-Katelijne–Beekkant extension of former line 1, and was for a year, until 6 October 1982, the western terminus of the metro. Following the reorganisation of the Brussels Metro on 4 April 2009, it is served by lines 1, 2, 5 and 6. The metro station runs parallel to a railway used for freight trains, and from 2010 again, as a suburban railway line of the future Brussels Regional Express Network (RER/GEN). Jacques Romain Georges Brel (, ; 8 April 1929 – 9 October 1978) was a Belgian singer and actor who composed and performed literate, thoughtful, and theatrical songs that generated a large, devoted following—initially in Belgium and France, later throughout the world. He is considered a master of the modern chanson. Although he recorded most of his songs in French and occasionally in Dutch, he became an influence on English-speaking songwriters and performers, such as Scott Walker, David Bowie, Alex Harvey, Marc Almond, Neil Hannon, and Rod McKuen. The 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region (All text and all but one graphic show the English name as Brussels-Capital Region.) are the political subdivisions of Belgium's central region. Anderlecht (, ) is one of the 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium. This list of Brussels metro and ''premetro'' stations includes all the underground stations in the Brussels metro and ''premetro'' network, arranged by line. The ''premetro'' refers to sections of the Brussels tramway network which run underground and at metro frequency. Line 1 Line 1 replaces former Line 1B since 4 April 2009. Line 1 does not service though the stations between Erasme/Erasmus and Jacques Brel, which are now serviced by Line 5. Line 2 Line 2 was expanded in April 2009 in order to connect the stations Delacroix and Gare de l'Ouest/Weststation.
