Jacques Aarden
Jacobus Maria “Jacques” Aarden (11 August 1914 - 23 November 1997) was a Dutch politician. His father was Petrus Jacobus Maria Aarden. In 1940 Aarden finished his education in economics. After the World War II, Second World War he joined the new Catholic People's Party, even though he also considered joining the Labour Party (Netherlands), Labour Party. He became a member of the Municipal council (Netherlands), municipal council in Voorburg in 1946, a position he would hold for 20 years. On 12 July 1962 he joined the House of Representatives (Netherlands), House of Representatives. He often voted in favour of pieces of left-progressive legislation, unlike most of his party. Tensions in the Catholic People's Party caused the so-called ‘Night of Schmelzer’ which ended the KVP-Anti-Revolutionary Party, ARP-Labour Cals cabinet. The Christian Historical Union ( nl, Christelijk-Historische Unie, CHU) was a Protestant Christian democratic political party in the Netherlands. The CHU is one of the predecessors of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), into which it merged in September 1980. Bastiaan "Bas" de Gaay Fortman (born 6 November 1937) is a retired Dutch politician and diplomat of the Political Party of Radicals (PPR) and later the GreenLeft (GL) party and economist. Career before politics After attending public elementary education, he attended the Christian Gymnasium in the Hague, specialising in sciences. After graduating in 1956 he studied law and economics at the Free University of Amsterdam, receiving his Master of Law, and Doctorandus in Economy in 1963 cum laude. In the last four years of his study he taught Civil Law, Commercial Law and Political Economics. Following graduation he became a fellow at the Social Faculty of the Free University, and wrote his dissertation in Economics. During this period he taught macro- and micro-economic theory.
