Jacquard Loom
The Jacquard machine () is a device fitted to a loom that simplifies the process of manufacturing textiles with such complex patterns as brocade, damask and matelassé. The resulting ensemble of the loom and Jacquard machine is then called a Jacquard loom. The machine was patented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1804, based on earlier inventions by the Frenchmen Basile Bouchon (1725), Jean Baptiste Falcon (1728), and Jacques Vaucanson (1740). The machine was controlled by a "chain of cards"; a number of punched cards laced together into a continuous sequence. Multiple rows of holes were punched on each card, with one complete card corresponding to one row of the design. Both the Jacquard process and the necessary loom attachment are named after their inventor. This mechanism is probably one of the most important weaving innovations as Jacquard shedding made possible the automatic production of unlimited varieties of complex pattern weaving. Joseph Marie Jacquard
Joseph Marie Charles ''dit'' (called or nicknamed) Jacquard (; 7 July 1752 – 7 August 1834) was a French weaver and merchant. He played an important role in the development of the earliest programmable loom (the " Jacquard loom"), which in turn played an important role in the development of other programmable machines, such as an early version of digital compiler used by IBM to develop the modern day computer. Robert B. Jacquard (born May 18, 1958 in Providence, Rhode Island) is an American politician and served as a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives representing District 17 from January 2003 to January 2021. Jacquard served consecutively from January 1993 until January 2003 in the District 26 seat. Project Jacquard
Google's Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP) is a skunkworks project, skunkworks team and in-house technology incubator, created by former DARPA director Regina Dugan. ATAP is similar to X (company), X, but works on projects, granting project leaders time—previously only two years—in which to move a project from concept to proven product. According to Dugan, the ideal ATAP project combines technology and science, requires a certain amount of novel research, and creates a marketable product. Historically, the ATAP team was born at Motorola and kept when Google sold Motorola to Lenovo in 2014; for this reason, ATAP ideas have tended to involve mobile hardware technology. AM Jacquard Systems, originally Jacquard Systems, was an American manufacturer and vendor of small office computer systems in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The systems were sold with ''Type-Rite'', a word processing system and ''Data-Rite'', a data management system. They also offered specialist software, Tomcat to legal firms. The original J100 Videocomputer, a "shared logic" system was joined by the single user J500 Videocomputer. Jacquard was acquired by AM International, inventors of the addressograph, where it was seen to complement their range of phototypesetters. Jacquard then also became the sales and marketing arm for the parent company's Amtext system. Albert Jacquard (23 December 1925 – 11 September 2013) was a French geneticist, popularizer of science and essayist. He was well known for defending ideas related to science, degrowth, needy persons and the environment. He was 10 years an active member of the French communist party (PCF). Beginnings He was born in Lyon to a catholic and conservative family from the region of Franche-Comté (east of France). At the age of nine, he was disfigured after a car accident in which his brother died. In 1943, he earned two baccalaureates in mathematics and philosophy.
