The Jacobs R-830 or L-5 is a seven-cylinder, air-cooled, radial engine for aircraft manufactured in the United States, production started in 1935.Gunston 1989, p.85. Design and development The R-830 was effectively an enlargement of the R-755 with strengthened stressed parts. With a bore and stroke of 5.0 in × 5.5 in (140 mm × 127 mm) the displacement was 831 cu in (13.6 L), takeoff power was around 285 hp (212 kW). The engine features steel cylinders with aluminum-alloy cylinder heads. The Fleet 50 Freighter was a Canadian twin-engine biplane general utility aircraft designed and built by Fleet Aircraft. This peculiar-looking aircraft had promise as a freighter and general use aircraft, but it was underpowered and only five were built. Development Design was started in 1936 to create a general purpose twin-engined utility aircraft for the Canadian market. It was designed as a short take-off freighter with features added to ease cargo handling. The Freighter was a biplane with the lower wing an inverted gull wing with either a float or wheel landing gear. Two radial piston engines were mounted in nacelles on the upper wing panels. The fuselage structure was welded steel tubing with duralumin formers, and a semi-monocoque duralumin nose section. Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah
The Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah is a seven-cylinder British air-cooled aircraft radial engine of 834 cu in (13.65 L) capacity introduced in 1935 and produced until 1948. Early variants of the Cheetah were initially known as the Lynx Major.Lumsden 2003, p.74. The Cheetah was used to power many British trainer aircraft during World War II including the Avro Anson and Airspeed Oxford. The Fleetwings Sea Bird (or Seabird) was an American-built amphibious aircraft of the 1930s. Design and production The Sea Bird was an amphibious utility aircraft designed in 1934–1935 by James C. Reddig for Fleetwings, Inc., of Bristol, Pennsylvania. While the aircraft's basic configuration had a precedent in the design of the Loening "Monoduck" developed by the Grover Loening Aircraft Company as a personal aircraft for Mr. Loening (for whom Reddig worked from 1929 to 1933), the Sea Bird was unusual because of its construction from spot-welded stainless steel. Wells joined forces to collaborate on a project to produce a large, powerful, and fast cabin biplane built specifically for the business executive.
