Jacob Hardenbergh
Jacob Hardenbergh (May 1823 New Paltz, Ulster County, New York – April 29, 1872 Albany, New York) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life He was the son of Richard Hardenbergh (1791–1870) and Catharine Maria (Crispell) Hardenbergh (1790–1833). The family removed to Shawangunk in 1829. He attended New Paltz Academy, and graduated from Rutgers College in 1844. Then he became a teacher at Fonda Academy, and at the same time studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1849, and commenced practice in Kingston. On April 3, 1850, he married Anna Elisabeth Holmes. He was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1867–68; and a member of the New York State Senate (14th D.) from 1870 until his death, sitting in the 93rd, 94th and 95th New York State Legislatures. New Paltz, New York
New Paltz () is an incorporated U.S. town in Ulster County, New York. The population was 14,003 at the 2010 U.S. Census. The town is located in the southeastern part of the county and is south of Kingston. New Paltz contains a village, also with the name New Paltz. The town is named for ''Palz'' (), the dialect name of the Palatinate, called ''Pfalz'' () in standard German. Due to the presence of what is now the State University of New York at New Paltz, it has been a college town for over 150 years. Louis DuBois (Huguenot)
Louis Du Bois (21 October 1626 – 1696) was a Huguenot colonist in New Netherland who, with two of his sons and nine other refugees, founded the town of New Paltz, New York. These Protestant refugees fled Catholic persecution in France, emigrating to the Rhenish Palatinate (in present-day Germany) and then to New Netherland, where they settled in Wiltwyck (present day Kingston, New York) and Nieuw Dorp (present-day Hurley, New York, settlements midway between New Amsterdam (present day New York City) and Beverwyck (today known as Albany, New York) before ultimately founding New Paltz. George Beach (politician)
George Beach (born July 26, 1817 Winchester, Litchfield County, Connecticut) was an American farmer, merchant and politician from New York. Life The family removed in 1825 to a farm in Greene County, New York. He attended the district schools, and engaged in farming. Later he became a merchant in Catskill. He was Supervisor of the Town of Jewett from 1855 to 1858; and was Chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Greene County from 1856 to 1858. He was a delegate to the 1860 and 1864 Democratic National Conventions. In July 1863, he was appointed as colonel of the 86th Regiment of the National Guard. He was a member of the New York State Senate (10th D.) in 1864 and 1865. In July 1867, he was appointed brigadier general of the 8th Brigade, 5th Division, of the National Guard. He was again a member of the State Senate (14th D.) in 1868 and 1869. In January 1870, he was appointed as a State Assessor. Jacob Rutsen Hardenbergh
Jacob Rutsen Hardenbergh (22 February 1735/6 – 30 October 1790) was an American Dutch Reformed clergyman, colonial and state legislator, and educator. Hardenbergh was a founder of Queen's College—now Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey—in 1766, and was later appointed as the college's first president. Hardenbergh was descended from a Dutch family that settled New Amsterdam in the seventeenth century and was prominent in New York colonial affairs. He prepared for ministry at the home of the Reverend John Frelinghuysen, a prominent Dutch Reformed minister near Somerville, New Jersey. After being ordained, Hardenbergh was called to serve congregations in New Jersey's Raritan River valley, and later in Ulster County, New York. During the 1760s, Hardenbergh was influential in the establishment of Queen's College, the eighth of nine colleges established during the colonial period. Major Johannes Hardenbergh (1670–1745), also known as Sir Johannes Hardenbergh, was the owner of the Hardenbergh patent of land in the Catskill Mountains. Biography He was born in Albany, New York, in 1670. He was Sheriff of Ulster County, New York in 1709. He served as a Major in the Ulster County Regiment. The Hasbrouck family was an early immigrant family to Ulster County, New York, and helped found New Paltz, New York. The Hasbrouck family were French Huguenots who fled persecution in France by moving to Germany, and then the United States. Two brothers, Jean II and Abraham, are the ancestors of almost all individuals in the United States with the last name "Hasbrouck," or some variation. History The Hasbrouck brothers Jean and Abraham were the sons of Jean Hasbrouck I and his wife Esther, both born in France. When Louis XIV gained the French throne in 1643, he aggressively forced Huguenots to convert to Roman Catholicism, an ongoing effort by French monarchs to perform this action. Louis imposed penalties, closed schools, and implemented Dragonnades, which were meant to intimidate the Huguenot families.
