Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp
Jacob Gerritszoon Cuyp (or Jacob Gerritsz. Cuijp; 1594 – 1652) was a portrait and landscape painter, best known for his portraits. He was born and died in Dordrecht, the son of the stained glass designer Gerrit Gerritsz Cuyp, who moved to Dordrecht from Venlo. He was the half-brother of Benjamin Gerritsz Cuyp and the father of the much more famous Aelbert Cuyp. He first painted still lifes, interiors with figures, and animals but later specialized in the pastoral landscapes for which he is famous. Dutch Golden Age painting is the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in Dutch history roughly spanning the 17th century, during and after the later part of the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) for Dutch independence. The new Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe and led European trade, science, and art. The northern Netherlandish provinces that made up the new state had traditionally been less important artistic centres than cities in Flanders in the south. The upheavals and large-scale transfers of population of the war, and the sharp break with the old monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions, meant that Dutch art had to reinvent itself almost entirely, a task in which it was very largely successful. Aert Van Der Neer
Aert van der Neer, or Aernout or Artus (c. 16039 November 1677), was a landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, specializing in small night scenes lit only by moonlight and fires, and snowy winter landscapes, both often looking down a canal or river. He was a contemporary of Aelbert Cuyp and Meindert Hobbema, and like the latter he lived and died in comparative obscurity. Biography Recent (2008) research by René van Dijk of the Gorinchem Regional Archive has established that Van Der Neer was born in Gorinchem. Spring 2009 newsletter (in Dutch) of the Stichting Gouden Eeuw Gorinchem (Gorinchem Golden Age Foundation). According to Arnold Houbraken, Van Der Neer lived in Gorinchem as a steward to the lords of Arkel, which would account for the absence of any pictures dating from his early years. ''Paulus Lesire'' (1611–1654) was a Dutch painter who specialised in history paintings and portraits. Born in Dordrecht, he was the son of a decorative painter and glass-artist from The Hague. He trained as a painter in Dordrecht and was probably a pupil of Jacob Cuyp, joining the town's Guild of St Luke in 1631. On 10 September 1634 he married Lowize de Claar from the Hague and a few years later moved to the Hague with her.
