Jacob Berens
Jacob Berens ( c. 1835 – 7 July 1916) was an Ojibwa chief whose native name was Nah-wee-kee-sick-quah-yash (and variations). The name means ''light moving in the centre of the sky'' and probably was a result of the Halley's comet occurrence in 1835. Berens was instrumental in negotiations of Treaty No.5 with the Canadian government in 1875. The community of Berens River, and the Berens River, itself gave rise to his English surname. Halley's Comet
Halley's Comet or Comet Halley, officially designated 1P/Halley, is a short-period comet visible from Earth every 75–79 years. Halley is the only known short-period comet that is regularly visible to the naked eye from Earth, and thus the only naked-eye comet that can appear twice in a human lifetime. Halley last appeared in the inner parts of the Solar System in 1986 and will next appear in mid-2061. Halley's periodic returns to the inner Solar System have been observed and recorded by astronomers around the world since at least 240 BC. ''Treaty Five'' is a treaty that was first established in September, 1875, between Queen Victoria and Saulteaux and Swampy Cree non-treaty band governments and peoples around Lake Winnipeg in the District of Keewatin. Berens River, Manitoba
Berens River is located in Manitoba, Canada, along the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg. This community is near the mouth of the Berens River, which flows west from the Ontario headwaters. Prior to 2017, the community was accessible only by winter road, boat, or airplane. In 2010, a project to construct an all-weather road from Bloodvein, connecting Berens River to the provincial road system, was announced. Road construction was completed in December 2017, linking the two communities to Provincial Road 304. The First Nation and fur trade community there was officially started in the 19th century, but the spot was a traditional hunting and fishing area for thousands of years. Berens River
The Berens River is a river in the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario, Canada. It flows west from an unnamed lake in Kenora District, Ontario, and discharges its waters into Lake Winnipeg near the community and First Nation of Berens River, Manitoba. The river has a number of lakes along its course, and many rapids. History The river has been a First Nations traditional hunting and fishing area for thousands of years. It was first travelled by European explorers in 1767, who descended the river to Lake Winnipeg after having crossed over from the Severn River. The river was named for Joseph Berens, then governor or the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). Berens River First Nation ( oj, Mememwi-ziibiing) is a First Nations band government in Manitoba, Canada. The First Nation has two reserves: Berens River 13 and Pigeon River 13A, located in the boreal forest east of Lake Winnipeg. The First Nation is governed by a chief and five councillors. Berens River is a member of the Southeast Resource Development Council with offices in Winnipeg. This Tribal Council has 9 member First Nations.
