The communal section (french: section communale, formerly section rurale) is the smallest administrative division in Haiti. The 144 communes are further divided into 571 communal sections. Jacmel
Jacmel (; ht, Jakmèl) is a commune in southern Haiti founded by the Spanish in 1504 and repopulated by the French in 1698. It is the capital of the department of Sud-Est, 24 miles (39 km) southwest of Port-au-Prince across the Tiburon Peninsula, and has an estimated population of 40,000, while the commune of Jacmel had a population of 137,966 at the 2003 Census. The town's name is derived from its indigenous Taíno name of ''Yaquimel''. In 1925, Jacmel was dubbed as the "City of Light," becoming the first in the Caribbean to have electricity. The city is known for its well-preserved French Colonial architecture built in the early 19th century. The town has been tentatively accepted as a World Heritage Site. Cayes-Jacmel ( ht, Kay Jakmèl) is a commune in the Jacmel Arrondissement, in the Sud-Est department of Haiti. It has 36693 inhabitants. Cayes-Jacmel is down the road from Cyvadier and home to a lovely public beach and has a remarkable farmers market (Wednesdays and Saturdays). The town is also home to amazing artists and artisans, including work in meticulously created miniature ships. The region's hydroelectric plant (running on a stream only a few inches deep) is nearby.
