Jacksonboro is a ghost town in Screven County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. History A variant name is "Jacksonborough". The community was named after James Jackson (1757–1806), Revolutionary War soldier, Georgia Congressman, Senator and Governor. Jacksonboro served as the original seat of Screven County. The county seat was transferred to Sylvania in 1847. Screven County, Georgia
Screven County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,067. The county seat is Sylvania. History The county was created on December 14, 1793, and was named for General James Screven, who died fighting in Georgia during the American Revolutionary War. Some wartime accounts used the alternate spelling of "Scriven" for the general, and the county's name was often spelled that way in its early history, as reflected on 19th-century Georgia maps. Sylvania became the county seat in 1847, moved from Jacksonborough, by an act of State legislation. James Jackson (Georgia Politician)
James Jackson (September 21, 1757 – March 19, 1806) was an early British-born Georgia politician of the Democratic-Republican Party. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1789 until 1791. He was also a U.S. Senator from Georgia from 1793 to 1795, and from 1801 until his death in 1806. In 1797 he was elected 23rd Governor of Georgia, serving from 1798 to 1801 before returning to the senate. Early life Jackson was born in Moretonhampstead, Devonshire, England. He immigrated at age 15 to Savannah, Georgia in 1772, and it was then that he became a ward of Savannah lawyer, John Wereat. As a young man, Jackson became well known as a duelist with a fiery temper; in February 1780 he killed Georgia governor George Wells in a duel. In 1785, he married Mary Charlotte Young, with whom he had five sons, four of whom later became prominent in the state's public affairs. He owned slaves. The Seaborn Goodall House in Screven County near Sylvania, Georgia was built in 1815. It is a Plantation Plain-style house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It has also been known as the Goodall-Dell House and locally as the Dell-Goodall House . It was built in Jacksonborough, a former town which was the county seat of Screven County from 1795 to 1847, by Seaborn Goodall.
