Jackie Wang
Jackie Wang is an American poet and scholar of the political economy of prisons and surveillance. In 2021 she was a National Book Award finalist in poetry for her book ''The Sunflower Cast A Spell To Save Us From The Void''. Biography Jackie Wang grew up in New Port Richey, Florida. Her brother was incarcerated when she was 16. She received her BA from New College in Sarasota, Florida. She is a harpist. Career Wang completed her PhD in African and African American Studies in 2020 at Harvard University with Elizabeth Hinton as her advisor. Wang is an assistant professor of American studies and ethnicity at the University of Southern California. She is a prison abolitionist. Writing As a PhD candidate, Wang published her first nonfiction book, ''Carceral Capitalism'', which examines the neoliberal, capitalist incentives to use prisons and other systems of incarceration to manage crisis, specifically with a focus on how race influences these processes. Superpredator Myth
The superpredator myth, known by its proponents as the superpredator theory, was a theory in criminology that became popular the 1990s in the United States, positing that a small but significant and increasing population of impulsive (often urban) youth were willing to commit violent crimes without remorse. John J. DiIulio Jr., the criminologist and political scientist who came up with the idea, predicted a large increase in youth crime and violence due to superpredators. American lawmakers seized on this idea, and implemented tough-on-crime legislation for juvenile offenders across the country, including life without parole sentences. In the United States, life imprisonment is amongst the most severe punishments provided by law, depending on the state, and second only to the death penalty. According to a 2013 study, 1 of every 20,000 inhabitants of the U.S. were imprisoned for life . Many U.S. states can release a convict on parole after a decade or more has passed, but in California, people sentenced to life imprisonment can normally apply for parole after seven years. The laws in the United States categorize life sentences as "determinate life sentences" or "indeterminate life sentences," the latter indicating the possibility of an abridged sentence, usually through the process of parole. An arrest warrant is a warrant issued by a judge or magistrate on behalf of the state, which authorizes the arrest and detention of an individual, or the search and seizure of an individual's property. Shooting Of Michael Brown
On August 9, 2014, 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Brown was accompanied by his 22-year-old male friend Dorian Johnson, who later stated that Brown had robbed a convenience store before the shooting occurred. Wilson, a white male Ferguson police officer, said that an altercation ensued when Brown attacked him in his police vehicle for control of Wilson's service pistol. Afro-pessimism is a critical framework that describes the ongoing effects of racism, colonialism, and historical processes of enslavement in the United States, including the trans-Atlantic slave trade and their impact on structural conditions as well as the personal, subjective, and lived experience and embodied reality of African Americans; it is particularly applicable to U.S. contexts. Racial Capitalism
Racial capitalism is a concept reframing the history of capitalism as grounded in the extraction of social and economic value from people of marginalized racial identities, typically from Black people. It was described by Cedric J. Robinson in his book '' Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition'', published in 1983, which, in contrast to both his predecessors and successors, theorized that ''all'' capitalism is inherently racial capitalism, and racialism is present in all layers of capitalism's socioeconomic stratification.
