Jackie Ryan
Jackie (John) Ryan (11 August 1904 – 17 February 1954) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who primarily played as a Half Forward as well as in the Full Forward line for the Kerry senior team between 1924 and 1934. Ryan won six All-Ireland Senior Football medals with Kerry over his ten-year career, and received favorable reviews. Ryan was born in Ardfert, before moving to Pembroke Street and later to Dawson's Terrace, Rock Street, Tralee. He died in Tralee in 1954. Ryan married Agnes Mary (Aggie) Sheehy in Tralee on 25 September 1928. They had one child who died in infancy. Family Ryan's parents were Christopher Ryan, a sergeant in the Royal Irish Constabulary, and Mary Josephine McDonnell. Both Christopher and Mary Josephine were from Cork. Ryan's sisters were Babe Ryan who for many years was Postmistress in Killiardrish, Canovee GAA, County Cork, and Dolly Ryan O'Connor, who lived in Tralee. Ardfert, County Kerry
Ardfert () is a village in County Kerry, Ireland. Historically a religious centre, the economy of the locality is driven by agriculture and its position as a dormitory town, being only from Tralee. The population of the village was 749 at the 2016 census. Origin The village's name signifies, according to Sir James Ware, "a wonderful place on an eminence", or as some interpret it, ''"the hill of miracles."'' Ardfert has also been considered a corruption of Ard Ert, ''"the high place of Ert or Erc"'', so called after the fifth century Irish Bishop Saint Erc, who made the place a bishop's seat. Ardfert was written by the Four Masters as ''Ard-ferta'', the height of the grave. GAA Interprovincial Championship
The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). The first Railway Cup competitions (the name is due to the donation of the trophy by Irish Rail) were held in 1927, with Munster winning the first football title and Leinster winning the first hurling title. Presently, Ulster hold the record for the most football Railway Cup wins with 30, while Munster has won the most hurling titles with 43. Tailteann Games (Irish Free State)
The Tailteann Games or Aonach Tailteann was an Irish sporting and cultural festival held in the Irish Free State in 1924, 1928, and 1932. It was intended as a modern revival of the Tailteann Games held from legendary times until the Norman invasion of Ireland; as such it drew inspiration from the Modern Olympics revival of the Ancient Olympics. Croke Park, the Dublin headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association, was the venue for the opening ceremony and many of the sports events, which were open to people of Irish birth or ancestry. The Tailteann Games were held shortly after the Summer Olympics, such that athletes participating in Paris 1924 and Amsterdam 1928 came to compete.
