Jackie Lyne
Jackie Lyne (1923 - 15 December 1993) was an Irish Gaelic football trainer, selector and player. His league and championship career at senior level with the Kerry county team spanned twelve seasons from 1943 to 1954. Born in Killarney, County Kerry, Lyne was raised in a family that had a strong association with the game of Gaelic football. His brothers, Dinny and Mikey, both enjoyed All-Ireland success with Kerry. Lyne's nephew, Pat Spillane, was an eight-time All-Ireland medal winner with Kerry between 1975 and 1986. Lyne played competitive Gaelic football during his schooling at St. Brendan's College. Here he claimed a Dunloe Cup medal before later winning county senior championship medals as a dual player. Lyne subsequently joined the Killarney Legion club and enjoyed an eighteen-year senior championship career, winning one county senior championship medal in 1946. Killarney Legion GAA
Killarney Legion are a Gaelic Athletic Association club from Killarney in County Kerry, Ireland. The club was founded on a March evening in 1929 when a group of eleven men held a meeting in the then Temperance Hall in High Street, Killarney. History In the Kerry Senior Football Championship, Legion reached the 3rd round by beating John Mitchels of Tralee 0-16 to 1-6, then losing to rivals Dr. Crokes 1-16 to 0-9. Legion now have a new state of the art clubhouse and have just commenced the development of a stand aligning the southern side of the main pitch. The stature of the juvenile section of the club is at an all-time high at present. Legion's U14 team represented Kerry in the Feile competition of 2006 held in Wicklow and again in 2009 held in Kildare. Sigerson Cup
The Sigerson Cup is the trophy for the premier Gaelic football championship among Higher Education institutions (Universities, Colleges and Institutes of Technology) in Ireland. It traditionally begins in mid January and ends in late February. The Sigerson Cup competition is administered by Comhairle Ard Oideachais Cumann Lúthchleas Gael (CLG), the GAA's Higher Education Council. The Trench Cup is the second tier football competition, Corn na Mac Léinn the third tier and Corn Comhairle Ardoideachais the fourth tier. The 1968 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 82nd staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 21 April 1968 and ended on 22 September 1968. Meath entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Longford in the Leinster semi-final. On 22 September 1968, Down won the championship following a 2-12 to 1-13 defeat of Kerry in the All-Ireland final. This was their third All-Ireland title and their first in seven championship seasons. Down's Paddy Doherty was the championship's top scorer with 1-25. The 1971 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 85th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 25 April 1971 and ended on 26 September 1971. Kerry entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Cork in the Munster final. On 26 September 1971, Offaly won the championship following a 1-14 to 2-8 defeat of Galway in the All-Ireland final. This was their first All-Ireland title. Munster Minor Football Championship
The Munster Minor Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by the Munster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1928 for the youngest competitors (under-18) in the province of Munster in Ireland. It is currently sponsored by Electric Ireland and therefore officially known as the Electric Ireland Munster GAA Football Minor Championship. The series of games are played during the summer months with the Munster final currently being played on the second Sunday in July. The minor final provides the curtain-raiser to the senior final. The winning team is presented with the Tadhg Crowley Cup. This was presented by Munster Council in 1990 to commemorate Tadhg Crowley, who was elected as Munster Council Treasurer in 1968 and served until his death in December 1989. 1951 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The 1951 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 65th staging of Ireland's premier Gaelic football knock-out competition. Mayo won their second All-Ireland in a row. The Curse of '51 Mayo have not won an All-Ireland football final since 1951. Legend has it that a priest became furious when the Mayo team bus returning home from the 1951 final passed by a funeral without showing respect as they celebrated their All-Ireland win. The priest supposedly put a curse on Mayo, that they would not win another title until all of the team had died. Since the deaths of Pádraig Carney in 2019 and Paddy Prendergast in 2021, only one member of the 1951 team remain living – Mick Loftus, though he was a sub and did not play on the day. Prendergast, who was the final surviving member of the team and played at full-back, died at the age of 95 on 26 September 2021.
