Jack Van Gelder
Jack van Gelder (; born 27 December 1950) is a Dutch sport commentator and television presenter. He presented many sports television programs of the broadcasting organization NOS, including '' NOS Studio Sportzomer'', '' NOS Studio Voetbal'' and '' NOS Langs de Lijn'', for forty years. He is also known for presenting '' Te land, ter zee en in de lucht''. In 2009, he presented the '' Nationaal Songfestival'', an annual competition held almost every year between 1956 and 2012 to select the country's representative for the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2014, he won the Theo Koomen Award, an annual award for best sports reporting or commentary. He played the role of Pontius Pilate in the 2014 edition of '' The Passion'', a Dutch Passion Play held every Maundy Thursday since 2011. In sports broadcasting, a sports commentator (also known as sports announcer or sportscaster) provides a real-time commentary of a game or event, usually during a live broadcast, traditionally delivered in the historical present tense. Radio was the first medium for sports broadcasts, and radio commentators must describe all aspects of the action to listeners who cannot see it for themselves. In the case of televised sports coverage, commentators are usually presented as a voiceover, with images of the contest shown on viewers' screens and sounds of the action and spectators heard in the background. The history of the Jews in the Netherlands began largely in the 16th century when they began to settle in Amsterdam and other cities. It has continued to the present. During the occupation of the Netherlands by Nazi Germany in May 1940, the Jewish community was severely persecuted. The area now known as the Netherlands was once part of the Spanish Empire but in 1581, the Northern Dutch provinces declared independence. A principal motive was the wish to practice Protestant Christianity, then forbidden under Spanish rule. Religious tolerance was effectively an important constitutional element of the newly independent state. This inevitably attracted the attention of Jews who were religiously oppressed in different parts of the world. Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday (also known as Great and Holy Thursday, Holy and Great Thursday, Covenant Thursday, Sheer Thursday, and Thursday of Mysteries, among other names) is the day during Holy Week that commemorates the Washing of the Feet (Maundy) and Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles, as described in the canonical gospels. It is the fifth day of Holy Week, preceded by Holy Wednesday and followed by Good Friday. "Maundy" comes from the Latin word ''mandatum'', or commandment, reflecting Jesus' words "I give you a new commandment." The Passion (Netherlands)
The Passion is a Dutch passion play, held every Maundy Thursday since 2011 in a different city each year. The event is broadcast live on Dutch television. In 2015 and 2018, it was broadcast on radio as well. The event began as a collaboration between the broadcasters EO and RKK. At present, it is mainly a joint effort between the broadcasters EO and KRO-NCRV. The participating organizations consider ''The Passion'' missionary work and they see it as a chance to promote Easter and Christianity in general. Creation The Dutch event and television program is partly inspired by the English local play ''Manchester Passion'', held on Good Friday and broadcast by the BBC Three. The production company Eye2Eye Media brought the event to the Netherlands.
