Jack Williams (New Zealand Politician)
John Henry Williams (21 December 1918 – 12 December 1975) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. Biography Early life Williams was born in Lawrence, Otago on 21 December 1918. His family moved north and he was educated at Kurow. Upon completing his education he moved to the Wairarapa region and took up farming in the town of Bideford. During World War II Williams enlisted in the New Zealand Army. He served in both Egypt and Italy rising to the rank of sergeant-major by the end of the war. After the war he returned to farming in Bideford and was allocated a 1,000 acre rehabilitation farm section, but later moved to farm at Te Ore Ore, near Masterton, instead. He later became a farming equipment salesman. He was also an executive member of the Masterton Secondary Schools' Board of Governors. Wairarapa (New Zealand Electorate)
Wairarapa electorate boundaries used since the Wairarapa is a New Zealand parliamentary electorate. It was first created in 1858 (with the first election in 1859) and existed until 1881. It was recreated in 1887 and has since existed continuously. In the early years, the electorate was for a time represented by two members. Wairarapa has been held by Kieran McAnulty since the . Population centres The initial 24 New Zealand electorates were defined by Governor George Grey in March 1853, based on the New Zealand Constitution Act 1852 that had been passed by the British government. The 1969 New Zealand general election was a nationwide vote to determine the shape of Parliament's 36th term. In New Zealand, the Leader of the Opposition (or Opposition leader) is a senior politician who leads the Official Opposition. The Leader of the Opposition is, by convention, the leader of the largest political party in the House of Representatives that is not in government (nor provides confidence and supply). This is usually the parliamentary leader of the second-largest caucus in the House of Representatives. When in the debating chamber the Opposition leader sits on the left-hand side of the centre table, in front of the Opposition and opposite the prime minister.
