Sir John Walsh, 1st Baronet
Sir John Benn Walsh, 1st Baronet (10 February 1759 – 7 June 1825) was an English landowner and MP. Life He was born in Cumberland as John Benn, the only son of William Benn of Moor Row, Whitehaven, Cumberland and his wife Mary, daughter of Timothy Nicholson. In 1787 he married Margaret, daughter of Joseph Fowke of Kent. In 1795 his wife inherited the India-made fortune of her mother's brother Sir John Walsh on condition that they changed the family name to Walsh, which they duly did, by Royal Licence and that it would go her eldest son when he came of age. The legacy included Warfield Park, Berkshire, the Radnorshire manors of Cefnllys and Coed Swydd and a number of farms in eastern Radnorshire. Benn worked for the East India Company in Benares, India as an assistant and secretary to his brother-in-law, Francis Fowke, making a small fortune in the process, which he invested in land to enlarge the family estates, making his family seat at Warfield. Midhurst (UK Parliament Constituency)
Midhurst was a parliamentary borough in Sussex, which elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons from 1311 until 1832, and then one member from 1832 until 1885, when the constituency was abolished. Before the Great Reform Act of 1832, it was one of the most notorious of England's rotten boroughs. History From its foundation in the 14th century until 1832, the borough consisted of part of the parish of Midhurst, a small market town in Sussex. John Walsh (24 May 1830 – 30 July 1898) was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Toronto, Canada from 1889 to 1898. Early years Born in Mooncoin, County Kilkenny, Ireland, Walsh was educated at St. John's College, Waterford before he to Canada in 1852 to complete his studies at the Saint-Sulpice Seminary in Montreal, Lower Canada. He was ordained a priest of Toronto, Upper Canada in 1854 by then Bishop of Toronto Armand-François-Marie de Charbonnel, at St. Michael's Cathedral. On his way to Toronto, in the summer of 1854, Walsh came down cholera, which permanently undermined his health. Father Walsh served as pastor at Brock. In April 1857 he was made parish priest of St Mary’s in Toronto, a parish established by Irish immigrants in 1852. A year later, he went to St. Paul's. Jack Walsh (born 1903) was a Gaelic footballer from Asdee, County Kerry. A left full back, he played with Kerry from 1924 to 1934. He won 5 Munster Senior Championships, 6 All-Ireland Senior Championships and 4 National Leagues during his career. Life and career Walsh was educated at Asdee National School, then St. Michael's College in Listowel. After a trial game, he was picked for Kerry in 1924, playing in the All-Ireland final against Dublin, which Kerry won by one point. His second All-Ireland victory was in 1926, when Kerry beat Kildare in the final after a replay. During this match Walsh switched to left full back to replace an ill team-mate, a position he then held until his retirement from inter-county football in 1934. Walsh was a member of the Kerry team for each of their "four in a row" All-Ireland titles in 1929, 1930, 1931 and 1932. John Edward Walsh (4 December 1912 – 20 May 1980) was an Australian cricketer who played nearly all of his cricket in England. An aggressive late-order left-handed batsman and a bowler of slow left-arm wrist-spin and googlies (of two varieties), Walsh was brought out of Australian club cricket in 1936 to play as one of the professionals in the side taken by the Nottinghamshire cricket impresario Sir Julien Cahn to tour Sri Lanka. Cahn's sides played some first-class matches on this and other tours and in English seasons across the 1930s and over the next three years, Walsh took more than 600 wickets for Cahn's sides, touring New Zealand in 1938-39 and playing three seasons in England. He also played a few county matches as an amateur for Leicestershire. Johnny Walsh (22 August 1874 – 1 September 1957) was a famous Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Tubberadora and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team from 1895 until 1900. Playing career Club Walsh played his club hurling with his local Tubberadora club and enjoyed much success. He won senior county championship titles with the club in 1895, 1896 and 1898. Tubberadora never again won another senior county title. Inter-county Walsh first came to prominence on the inter-county scene with Tipperray in 1890. Cork, however, were the standard bearers in the province of Munster at the time. In 1895 Tipp faced Limerick in the provincial final and the game turned into a rout. John Bernard Walsh (20 August 1909 – 23 June 1998) was an Irish people, Irish Gaelic footballer. His All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, championship career with the Kerry GAA, Kerry senior team spanned thirteen seasons from 1932 until 1944. Career Walsh first played competitive football for the Ballylongford GAA, Ballylongford club. Johnny "Jabber" Walsh (born 8 November 1957) is an Irish former footballer who played as a midfielder. He made his one and only appearance for the Republic of Ireland national team on 30 May 1982 in a 2–1 defeat to Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain. Walsh scored the opening goal in a 2–1 win for the League of Ireland XI against the Scottish Football League XI on St Patrick's Day 1980. At club level, he played for many years on the successful Limerick F.C. teams of the 1980s. Walsh made his League of Ireland debut on 3 October 1976.
