Jack Smart (footballer)
John 'Jack' Smart was a professional footballer who played for Bristol Rovers and Reading in the early twentieth century. He was born in Kingswood in what is now South Gloucestershire and after starting out with Bristol East went on to play 105 games for Bristol Rovers in the Southern League, scoring twice. He moved to Reading from Rovers in 1910. Unfortunately Smart disappeared after being sent to war, it is widely believed he was killed after not putting up much of a fight, similar to his football performances. Jack Smart (cricketer)
John Abbotts (or Abbott) Smart (12 April 1891 – 3 October 1979) was an English first-class cricketer and Test match umpire. Smart was born in Forest Hill near Marlborough in Wiltshire, into a cricketing family. His father was a professional cricketer for Wiltshire; and his brother Cyril Smart played first-class cricket for Warwickshire and Glamorgan, who set a world record in 1935 by hitting 32 runs off one over. Two other brothers played as professionals at clubs in Wales. Smart worked as a miner before becoming a professional county cricketer. He played Minor Counties cricket for Wiltshire from 1910 to 1912, and made his first-class cricket debut for Warwickshire in 1919, playing alongside his brother Cyril from 1920 to 1922. He became a regular fixture in the Warwickshire side from 1920, playing 238 games in all. John Elliott Smart
Lieutenant Commander John Elliott Smart (1 March 1916 – 3 February 2008) was an officer in the Royal Navy, who commanded one of the midget submarines that attacked the German cruiser ''Lützow'' and the Japanese cruiser ''Takao'' during the Second World War. Early life Smart was born on 1 March 1916 in Northumberland in England and joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) in 1938, his commission as a sub-lieutenant was confirmed on 3 October 1939. He served the first part of the war in minesweepers in the eastern Mediterranean. He was promoted lieutenant on 1 March 1941, then joined HMS Varbel, the midget submarine training depot, in 1943. Operation Source Six midget submarines were to take part in the attack on the German cruiser ''Lützow'' in Altenfjord, Norway.
