Jack Simpson (politician)
John Hamilton "Jack" Simpson (8 February 1929 – 19 May 2015) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Essendon to furniture retailer William Simpson and his wife Helen. He attended state schools and worked as a rouseabout at shearing sheds from 1944 to 1947 and then as a French polisher from 1948 to 1955. From 1955 to 1976 he managed the family furniture business at Moonee Ponds. He married Joyce Mavis Laurence on 22 February 1958; they had four daughters. He also had a career in the Victorian Football League, playing for Essendon from 1949 to 1951. He had joined the Labor Party in 1961, and in 1976 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Essendon, Victoria
Essendon is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north-west of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Moonee Valley local government area. Essendon recorded a population of 21,240 at the 2021 census. Essendon is bounded in the west by Hoffmans Road, in the north by Keilor Road and Woodland Street, in the east by the Moonee Ponds Creek, and in the south by Buckley Street (except for a small section further south bordering Moonee Ponds). History Essendon and the banks of the Maribyrnong River were originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri clan of the Woiwurrung speaking people of the Kulin nation. Bob Sercombe
Robert Charles Grant Sercombe (born 3 April 1949) is a former Australian politician who represented the Division of Maribyrnong, Victoria for the Australian Labor Party from March 1996 until his retirement at the 2007 federal election. He was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and was educated at the University of Melbourne. He was a public servant, social planner, and administrator before entering politics. He was an adviser to Clyde Holding, a former Victorian opposition leader and a minister in the Hawke government from 1983 until 1988. Sercombe was a member of the Essendon City Council in 1983 and 1984. Sercombe was the Member for Niddrie in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1988 until 1996. He was Deputy Leader of the Opposition 1993–94 and a member of the Opposition Shadow Ministry 1992–94. In particular, it was used to describe show or circus workers who handled materials for construction on fairgrounds. In modern times it is applied to rural employment, such as those assisting sheep shearing, and positions in the oil industry.
