John James McCoy is a fictional character in the television drama '' Law & Order''. He was created by Dick Wolf and Michael S. Chernuchin and has been portrayed by Sam Waterston during both the show's original run from 1994 to 2010 and since its return in 2022. He is the longest-tenured character on the show, appearing in 18 seasons. The 17th season of '' Law & Order'' premiered on NBC on September 22, 2006, and concluded on May 18, 2007. This is the last season to feature Fred Thompson ( Arthur Branch) the only season to feature Milena Govich and the first season to feature Assistant District Attorney Connie Rubirosa. The twenty-first season of '' Law & Order'', an American police procedural and legal drama, was ordered by NBC on September 28, 2021, over a decade after its original cancellation on May 24, 2010.
