Jack Jacobs
Jack Jacobs (August 7, 1919 – January 12, 1974), nicknamed "Indian Jack", was an American and Canadian football player in the National Football League and Western Interprovincial Football Union. He was a charter member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, inducted in 1963. Early life Jacobs was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma, and played high school football at Muskogee High School. He was popularly known as "Indian Jack" because he was a Creek man. College career Jacobs played college football at the University of Oklahoma. Considered a phenomenal all-round player, Jack started at both quarterback and punter, where he averaged 47.84 yards per kick in 1940 (which remains an OU record) and finished his collegiate career with a career average of 42.10. American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The 1942 National Football League Draft was held on December 22, 1941, at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago. Two members of the draft class have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Bill Dudley, the first overall selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Mac Speedie, 135th overall selection by the Detroit Lions. Additionally, one member of the draft class became a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame college basketball coach, Ralph Miller. The 1941 Marquette Hilltoppers football team was an American football team that represented Marquette University as an independent during the 1941 college football season. In its first season under head coach Thomas E. Stidham, the team compiled a 4–5 record and outscored opponents by a total of 162 to 151. Senior halfback Jimmy Richardson completed 58 of 91 passes during the 1941 season for a .637 completion percentage. His 58 completed passes was believed to be a new national record for passing efficiency, passing the previous record of .631 set by Oklahoma's Hugh McCullough in 1938. A punter (P) in gridiron football is a special teams player who receives the snapped ball directly from the line of scrimmage and then punts (kicks) the football to the opposing team so as to limit any field position advantage. This generally happens on a fourth down in American football and a third down in Canadian football. Punters may also occasionally take part in fake punts in those same situations, when they throw or run the football instead of punting.
