Jack J. Lissauer
Jack Jonathan Lissauer (born 1957) is an American research scientist who has worked for NASA's Ames Research Center since 1996. He is a science co-investigator on the Kepler space telescope mission. Biography Lissauer received a PhD in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982. Prior to joining NASA, Lissauer was an associate professor (September 1993 – August 1996) and assistant professor (June 1987 – August 1993) at Stony Brook University. Earlier, he served as a visiting researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara (July 1985 – June 1987) and as an assistant research astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley (January–July 1985). His primary research interests are the formation of planetary systems, planetary dynamics and chaos, planetary ring systems, and circumstellar/protoplanetary disks. Mab (moon)
Mab, or Uranus XXVI, is an inner satellite of Uranus. It was discovered by Mark R. Showalter and Jack J. Lissauer in 2003 using the Hubble Space Telescope. It was named after Queen Mab, a fairy queen from English folklore who is mentioned in William Shakespeare's play ''Romeo and Juliet''. Because the moon is small and dark, it was not seen in the heavily scrutinized images taken by ''Voyager 2'' during its Uranus flyby in 1986. However, it is brighter than another moon, Perdita, which was discovered from Voyager's photos in 1997. This led scientists to re-examine the old photos again, and the satellite was finally found in the images. The size of Mab is not known exactly. If it is as dark as Puck, it is about 24 km in diameter. On the other hand, if it is brightly coloured like the neighbouring moon Miranda, it would be even smaller than Cupid and comparable to the smallest outer satellites. Mab is heavily perturbed. Hippocamp (moon)
Hippocamp, also designated Neptune XIV, is a small moon of Neptune discovered on 1 July 2013. It was found by astronomer Mark Showalter by analyzing archived Neptune photographs the Hubble Space Telescope captured between 2004 and 2009. The moon is so dim that it was not observed when the ''Voyager 2'' space probe flew by Neptune and its moons in 1989. It is about in diameter, and orbits Neptune in about 23 hours, just under one Earth day. Due to its unusually close distance to Neptune's largest inner moon Proteus, it has been hypothesized that Hippocamp may have accreted from material ejected by an impact on Proteus several billion years ago. Cupid (moon)
Cupid is an inner satellite of Uranus. It was discovered by Mark R. Showalter and Jack J. Lissauer in 2003 using the Hubble Space Telescope. It was named after a character in William Shakespeare's play ''Timon of Athens''. It is the smallest known inner Uranian satellite, crudely estimated to be only about 18 km in diameter. This and the dark surface made it too dim to be detected by the ''Voyager 2'' cameras during its Uranus flyby in 1986. The orbit of Cupid differs only by 863 km from the orbit of the larger moon Belinda. Unlike Mab and Perdita, Uranian satellites also discovered in 2003, it does not seem to be perturbed. Following its discovery, Cupid was given the temporary designation S/2003 U 2. It is also designated Uranus XXVII. The Ames Research Center (ARC), also known as NASA Ames, is a major NASA research center at Moffett Federal Airfield in California's Silicon Valley. It was founded in 1939 as the second National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) laboratory.
