Jack Harris (Ontario Politician)
Robert John Harris (September 16, 1917 – June 12, 1997) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1962 to 1967 who represented the downtown Toronto riding of Beaches. Background Harris was born at Toronto East General Hospital, in East York, a hospital founded by his father, Joseph Henry Harris, in 1929. During World War II, he saw five years of service in Italy, France, the Netherlands and Germany. He started the war as a Lieutenant Captain of the 48th Highlanders of Canada infantry regiment and he was promoted to the rank of Major before returning to Canada. He served on a variety of community and charitable boards, including those of the Toronto East General Hospital, the Toronto East YMCA, and the Royal Canadian Legion. A Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) is an elected member of the Legislative Assembly of the Canadian province of Ontario. John Robarts
John Parmenter Robarts (January 11, 1917 – October 18, 1982) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the 17th premier of Ontario from 1961 to 1971. He was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. Early life Robarts was born in Banff, Alberta, to Herbert Roberts and Ellen Florence May Robarts, making him the only Ontario premier not to have been born in Ontario. John Lasarus Williams (29 October 1924 – 15 June 2004), known as John L, was a Welsh nationalist activist. Williams was born in Llangoed on Anglesey, but lived most of his life in nearby Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. In his youth, he was a keen footballer, and he also worked as a teacher. His activism started when he campaigned against the refusal of Brewer Spinks, an employer in Blaenau Ffestiniog, to permit his staff to speak Welsh. Beaches—Woodbine was a provincial electoral district in Ontario, Canada. It was created in 1967 by merging the former ridings of Woodbine and Beaches. Boundaries The riding was created prior to the 1967 election by combining the ridings of Woodbine and Beaches. The boundaries of the new riding were as follows: From the southwest point where Coxwell Avenue met Lake Ontario the boundary followed Coxwell north to Queen Street East. It then went west a short distance to Rhodes Avenue. It followed Rhodes Avenue north to Danforth Avenue. It then went back east along Danforth to Coxwell. It then went north along Coxwell to the city limits. Along the north it followed the city limits until it reached Victoria Park Avenue. Woodbine (electoral District)
Woodbine was an Ontario provincial electoral district that existed from 1926 to 1967. It covered a section of the eastern city of Toronto east of Jones Avenue and west of Woodbine Avenue. In 1966 there was a major redrawing of the riding boundaries in Toronto and the riding was split. The portion east of Greenwood Avenue was merged into the Beaches—Woodbine and the portion west went into the Riverdale riding. Boundaries In 1926 the riding was carved out of the existing riding of Riverdale with the following boundaries. The southern boundary was Lake Ontario. Going north along the west side it formed a line following Knox Avenue all the way to Queen Street East. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is a Crown corporation that retails and distributes alcoholic beverages throughout the Canadian province of Ontario. It is accountable to the Legislative Assembly through the minister of finance. It was established in 1927 by the government of Premier George Howard Ferguson to sell liquor, wine, and beer. Such sales were banned outright in 1916 as part of prohibition in Canada. The creation of the LCBO marked an easing of the province's temperance regime. The 1963 Ontario general election was held on September 25, 1963, to elect the 108 members of the 27th Legislative Assembly of Ontario (Members of Provincial Parliament, or "MPPs") of the Province of Ontario. Backbench
In Westminster and other parliamentary systems, a backbencher is a member of parliament (MP) or a legislator who occupies no governmental office and is not a frontbench spokesperson in the Opposition, being instead simply a member of the "rank and file". The term dates from 1855. The term derives from the fact that they sit physically behind the frontbench in the House of Commons. A backbencher may be a new parliamentary member yet to receive high office, a senior figure dropped from government, someone who for whatever reason is not chosen to sit in the government or an opposition spokesperson (such as a shadow cabinet if one exists), or someone who prefers to be a background influence, not in the spotlight.
