John Gage
John Burdette Gage (born October 9, 1942) was the 21st employee of Sun Microsystems, where he is credited with creating the phrase The Network is the Computer. He served as vice president and chief researcher and director of the Science Office for Sun Microsystems, until leaving on June 9, 2008, to join Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers as a partner to work on green technologies for global warming; he departed KPCB in 2010 to apply what he had learned "to broader issues in other parts of the world". In 2006, he joined the board of the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation, to build a school and orphanage in Kapenguria, in remote north-west Kenya. In 2012, he helped build the Kibera Town Centre, a major water and community education center in the middle of Kibera, Kenya, the largest slum in Africa. He is widely recognised for his eccentric clothing and wild hair and his production of several cutting edge drum and bass tracks. Sir John Gage was a major English landowner and grandfather of the Tudor courtier Sir John Gage KG. Background He was a son of John Gage and his wife Joan, heiress of John Sudgrove of Sudgrove, Gloucestershire. The marriage of his parents appears in a pedigree that was compiled in 1627 from family deeds by Richard Hoskins of the Inner Temple. In 1416-17, John Sudgrove settled his lands at Miserden and Sudgrove on John and Joan Gage and Alice, his other daughter, with her husband John Bovey. Joan survived her husband and, on 10 August 1438, she and her son John conveyed their lands in Cirencester, Nether Siddington, Miserden and Brimsfield to trustees. Sir John Gage KG (28 October 1479 – 18 April 1556) was an English courtier during the Tudor period. He held a number of offices, including Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1542–1547), Comptroller of the Household (1540–1547), Constable of the Tower (1540–1556) and Lord Chamberlain (1553–1556). John Gage (19th-century Landowner)
John Gage (August 12, 1802 – December 29, 1890) was an American business and landowner from the state of Illinois. He would live in Cook County for 10 years. The census-designated place of Gages Lake in Warren Township is named after him and his brother George Gage. He was the husband of New Jersey Woman Suffrage Movement organizer Portia Kellogg Gage. Biography John was born to James Gage and Polly Drury Gage on August 12, 1802, in Litchfield, Herkimer County, New York. On October 4th, 1830 he married American activist and suffragist Portia Kellogg in Watertown, New York. Both were known to be strong supporters of racial, gender, and religious equality. John and Portia moved to Chicago in 1836, and with the population only being 3,000 at the time, import prices were high and flour was nearly 18 dollars a barrel. Sir John Gage, 1st Baronet (died 3 October 1633) was an English baronet and landowner, and ancestor of the Viscounts Gage. Gage was the son of Thomas Gage and Elizabeth Guilford. He married Penelope Darcy, a daughter of Thomas Darcy, 1st Earl Rivers and Mary Kitson, on 28 June 1611. They had eight children. His wife had the possession of Hengrave Hall in Suffolk which she would leave to their third son Edward. This would become the seat of his descendants, the Rokewode-Gage baronets. He was made a baronet, of Firle in Sussex in the Baronetage of England, by Charles I on 26 March 1622. From 1934 to 1940, and billed as John Gordon Gage, he worked as a stage manager and occasional actor on Broadway.
