Jack Freeman (American Football, Born 1922)
Jack Lenard Freeman (January 20, 1922 – July 23, 1990) was an American football guard for the Brooklyn Dodgers of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). He played college football at Texas. College football career Freeman played football for the Texas Longhorns from 1938 to 1942. He was inducted into the Texas Longhorn Hall of Honor, which he helped organize, in 1989. Professional football career Philadelphia-Pittsburgh Steagles Freeman was drafted in the 27th round of the 1943 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, who would later temporarily merge with the Philadelphia Eagles to form the Philadelphia-Pittsburgh Steagles for the 1943 NFL season. However, Freeman did not play with the Steagles in 1943, as he was completing his Army Air Corps training at Randolph Air Base in San Antonio, Texas. In gridiron football, a guard (G), otherwise known as an offensive guard (OG), is a player who lines up between the center (American football), center and the offensive tackle, tackles on the offensive line of a football team on the line of scrimmage used primarily for Blocking (American football), blocking. Right guards (RG) is the term for the guards on the right of the offensive line, while left guards (LG) are on the left side. Guards are to the right or left of the center. 1943 NFL Season
The 1943 NFL season was the 24th regular season of the National Football League. Due to the exodus of players who had left to serve in World War II, the Cleveland Rams were granted permission to suspend operations for this season, while the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers merged for this one season, with the combined team (known as Phil-Pitt and called the "Steagles" by fans) playing four home games in Philadelphia and two in Pittsburgh. With only 8 teams playing, the 1943 season ties the 1932 season for the fewest teams in the league. Randolph Air Force Base
Randolph Air Force Base was an United States Air Force base located at Universal City, Texas ( east-northeast of Downtown San Antonio). Opened in 1931, Randolph has been a flying training facility for the United States Army Air Corps, the United States Army Air Forces, and the Air Force during its entire existence. On 1 October 2010, Randolph AFB merged with Lackland Air Force Base and the US Army's Fort Sam Houston to form Joint Base San Antonio. Naming Randolph AFB was named after Captain William Millican Randolph, a native of Austin, who was on the base naming committee at the time of his death in a crash.
