John Alf Brown
John "Jack" Alf Brown, colloquially known as John Alf or "Big John",Davies (1975), pg 242. (October 1881 – 3 August 1936) was a Welsh international rugby union forward player who played club rugby for Cardiff and county rugby for Glamorgan. Brown was capped seven times for Wales and although he missed facing the first touring South African team in 1906 with Wales, he faced the tourist with both Cardiff and Glamorgan. Brown was reputed to be an extremely tough and physical forward player,Billot (1974), pg 29. which was reflected in his manual occupation as a coal trimmer at Cardiff Docks. He died in 1936 from Pneumoconiosis. Rugby career Club career Brown first came to note as a rugby player while representing Cardiff based team St. Peters RFC. Brown was made vice-captain of St. Peters, but in 1901 moved to first class team Cardiff. Jack Brown (cricketer)
John Thomas Brown (20 August 1869 – 4 November 1904) was an English professional cricketer, who played primarily as a batsman. He was Yorkshire's first great opening batsman, a lineage continued by Herbert Sutcliffe, Len Hutton and Geoffrey Boycott. He took five wickets in an innings on three occasions with his leg breaks, but except in 1901 (when he claimed 57 wickets) he generally bowled little. County career Born in Driffield, Yorkshire, Brown made his first-class debut for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 1889. Here he formed a successful opening partnership with John Tunnicliffe. From 1895 to 1903, he passed 1,000 runs each season, and in 1897 made his highest score of 311, against Sussex at Bramall Lane, following it up with 300 the following year against Derbyshire at Chesterfield. John Henry Brown (19 March 1899 – 9 April 1962) was an English football goalkeeper who played almost all his professional career with Sheffield Wednesday before moving to play briefly for Hartlepool United. Brown's career lasted from 1923 to 1937 during which time he made 466 League appearances (508 including FA Cup). He will be remembered for being Sheffield Wednesday's goalkeeper during a golden period between 1925 and 1935 in which they won two Division One championships, the FA Cup and a Division Two championship. Jack Brown (born 27 July 2001) is a Scottish professional footballer who plays for Peterhead, as a midfielder. Career Brown began his career with Inverness Caledonian Thistle, and was one of 10 youth players to turn professional with the club in May 2018. He made his senior debut on 27 January 2018, in a 3–1 league defeat away at Falkirk. In July 2019, he was one of nine Inverness players loaned to Fort William in the Highland Football League. After the club was furloughed in 2020 due to COVID-19, Brown was one of many youth players released after it was decided that it was financially unwise for the club to have wage bills for players not getting any game time. Following this he was signed on by Rothes in the Highland League, leaving Inverness with only one appearance to his name. Jack Brown (10 November 1929 – 4 September 1991) was a British trade union leader. Born in Leigh, Greater Manchester, Brown was educated at Pennington School and Leigh Secondary Modern School. On leaving school, he worked in a cotton mill in Bolton, and joined the Bolton and District Card, Blowing and Ring Room Operatives' Provincial Association. In 1961, he was elected as general secretary of the union. The union was affiliated to the National Union of Textile and Allied Workers (NUTAW), and in 1973, Brown was elected as its assistant general secretary. The following year, NUTAW became part of the new Amalgamated Textile Workers' Union (ATWU), with Brown continuing as assistant general secretary until 1976, when he won the top job of general secretary. As leader of the union, Brown focused on obtaining changes in the law, so that workers with byssinosis or occupational deafness would be entitled to compensation. Jack Nixon Browne, Baron Craigton CBE PC (3 September 1904 – 28 July 1993) was a Scottish Conservative politician. Early life The son of Edwin Gilbert Izod, he adopted the surname Browne in 1920 as his family felt his more unusual surname a handicap. Educated at Cheltenham College, Browne served in World War II as an Acting Group Captain in Balloon Command of the Royal Air Force. He was awarded the CBE in 1944. Managed the Carntyne Greyhound Stadium, Glasgow in the later 1920s. Whilst there he tried to "cash-in" on the enw craze of 1928, dirt track racing. He built a track inside the greyhound track. The venture was not successful but as Jack Nixon-Browne he raced in both meetings he staged. He won most of his races in the second meeting as he had unlimited time to practice.
