Jack Bownass
John Jack Bownass (July 27, 1930 – February 10, 2010) was a professional ice hockey player who played 80 games in the National Hockey League. He played with the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers. He was born and died in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association established a second Canada men's national ice hockey team in 1967, to increase the available pool of players at the 1968 Winter Olympics, and Father David Bauer recruited Bownass to coach the second team which was based in Ottawa. Defence or defense (in American English) in ice hockey is a player position that is primarily responsible for preventing the opposing team from scoring. They are often referred to as defencemen, D, D-men or blueliners (the latter a reference to the blue line in ice hockey which represents the boundary of the offensive zone; defencemen generally position themselves along the line to keep the puck in the zone). They were once called cover-point. In regular play, two defencemen complement three forwards and a goaltender on the ice.
