Jack Barton
Jack Barton (birth unknown – death unknown) was an English professional rugby league footballer who played between 1901 and 1910. He played at club level for Wigan as a forward. Playing career Born in Standish, Barton started his career with local side Standish South End before signing for Wigan in 1901. He made his début for Wigan in December 1901 against Altrincham at Springfield Park. Barton also played in the Wigan's first match at Central Park against Batley in 1902. Barton spent nine years at Wigan, playing 213 first team games for the club and scoring 15 tries. Standish, Greater Manchester
Standish is a small town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, it is on the A49 road between Chorley and Wigan, near Junction 27 of the M6 motorway. The population of the town was 13,278 in the 2011 census. Formed around a crossroads, the village has grown into a small town as urban expansion between Manchester and Liverpool extends outwards. Wigan ( ) is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Douglas. The town is midway between the two cities of Manchester, to the south-east, and Liverpool, to the south-west. Historically, English rugby league clubs competed for the Lancashire Cup and the Yorkshire Cup, known collectively as the county cups. The leading rugby clubs in Yorkshire had played in a cup competition (affectionately known as ''t’owd tin pot'') for several years prior to the schism of 1895. However, the Lancashire authorities had refused to sanction a similar tournament, fearing it would lead to professionalism. After the split, the replacement for the Yorkshire Cup was not immediately introduced; however, new Yorkshire and Lancashire Cups were introduced in the 1905–06 season. The county cups were played on the same basis as the Challenge Cup, with an open draw and straight knock-out matches leading to a final. The Yorkshire League and the Lancashire League formed two sections of the Rugby Football League Championship for much of its history. Initially, the 22 clubs that broke away in 1895 played in one combined league; however, the following season saw the addition of many clubs, and the League was split into two separate county competitions.
