Jack Arnold (rugby League)
Jack Arnold (born ) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership. Playing career Arnold played for the Western Suburbs Magpies, Western Suburbs (making his debut in the 1936 NSWRFL season, 1936 season as the second youngest debutant in rugby league history at 16 years of age), and Sydney Roosters, Eastern Suburbs during his career. He had just the one season at Wests before joining Eastern Suburbs in NSWRFL season 1938, 1938 where he played over 10 matches, remaining there until his retirement in 1949. Arnold was a member of the Easts' side that won premierships in 1940 and 1945, he was Also a member of the side that went down to St George Dragons, St George in 1941, that club's first premiership. Western Suburbs Magpies
The Western Suburbs Magpies (legal name: Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club Ltd) are an Australian rugby league football club based in the western suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. Formed in 1908, Wests, as they are commonly referred to, were one of the nine foundation clubs of the first New South Wales Rugby League competition in Australia. The club, as a sole entity, departed the top-flight competition in 1999 after forming a 50–50 joint venture with Balmain Tigers to form the Wests Tigers. The club currently fields sides in the NSW State Cup (Canterbury Cup), Ron Massey Cup (Opens), S.G. Ball Cup (Under 18's) and Harold Matthews Cup (Under 16's) competitions. Dick Dunn (rugby League)
Richard Alfred Dunn (1920–2006) was an Australian rugby league footballer and coach in the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership (NSWRFL). Playing career Dunn played 148 matches for the Eastern Suburbs club in the years (1938–47). A local junior of that club, Dunn grew up idolising the senior players, carrying the kit bags of legends like Dave Brown and Ray Stehr; a few years later he was playing alongside of them. Dunn played most of his career in the s though in later years he moved to . Dunn played in four premiership deciders in his career, winning in 1940 and 1945. Dunn is best remembered for the 1945 Grand Final in which he scored 19 of East's 22 points, a record that still stands today for the most points scored in a premiership decider. Balmain Tigers
The Balmain Tigers (also known as the Sydney Tigers from 1995–96) are a rugby league club based in the inner-western Sydney suburb of Balmain. They were a founding member of the New South Wales Rugby League and one of the most successful in the history of the premiership, with eleven titles. In 1999 they formed a joint venture club with the Western Suburbs Magpies club to form the Wests Tigers for competition in the National Rugby League (NRL). The Sydney Roosters are an Australian professional Rugby league, Rugby League Football Club based in the Eastern Suburbs (Sydney) and parts of inner Sydney. The club competes in the National Rugby League (NRL) competition. The Roosters have won fifteen New South Wales Rugby League premiership, New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) and National Rugby League titles, and several other competitions. Try (rugby)
A try is a way of scoring points in rugby union and rugby league football. A try is scored by grounding the ball in the opposition's in-goal area (on or behind the goal line). Rugby union and league differ slightly in defining "grounding the ball" and the "in-goal" area. In rugby union a try is worth 5 points, in rugby league a try is worth 4 points. The term "try" comes from "try at goal", signifying that grounding the ball originally only gave the attacking team the opportunity to try to score with a kick at goal. A try is analogous to a touchdown in American and Canadian football, with the major difference being that a try requires the ball be simultaneously touching the ground and an attacking player, whereas a touchdown merely requires that the ball enter the end zone while in the possession of a player.
