Jacinto Vera, Montevideo
Jacinto Vera is a ''barrio'' (neighbourhood or district) of Montevideo, Uruguay, named after Jacinto Vera (1813 - 1881), the first Catholic bishop of Montevideo. It is home to the ex-Military School, now the Army Command. Location Jacinto Vera shares borders with La Figurita to the west, Brazo Oriental and BolÃvar to the north, Larrañaga to the east and La Comercial to the south. Brazo Oriental
Brazo Oriental is a '' barrio'' (neighbourhood or district) of Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Brazo Oriental is a residential zone located approximately from Montevideo's centre. Location and origin of name Brazo Oriental borders La Figurita and Jacinto Vera to the south, BolÃvar to the east, Cerrito de la Victoria to the northeast, Aires Puros to the northwest and Atahualpa to the west. It is delimited by Artigas Boulevard to the south, Burgues Avenue to the west and José Batlle y Ordóñez Boulevard to the north. It was reported in the press around 1910 that there had been a mortal fight with knives between a "Porteño" (Argentinian) and an "Oriental" (Uruguayan) at the corner of the actual avenues San MartÃn and Luis Alberto de Herrera. Jacinto Vera
Blessed Jacinto Vera Durán (Atlantic Ocean, 3 July 1813 – Pan de Azúcar, Uruguay, 6 May 1881) was a Uruguayan Roman Catholic prelate who served as the first bishop of Montevideo. He was an active minister in Uruguay, although his efforts to renew the priesthood and other ecclesial initiatives brought him into conflict with the Uruguayan government; this was the cause of his exile from the country, establishing himself in Buenos Aires between October 1862 and August 1863, at which point a political change in Uruguay made his return possible. The popularity showcased by his reception continued throughout the rest of his life due to his intense and prolonged missionary work all over the diocese of Montevideo (at that time the only one for the whole country), of which he was made bishop upon its creation in 1878.
