Jakob Albertus Victor (Jaap) Berghuis, (15 August 1945 – 29 July 2005) was a Dutch artist. Born in the town of Smilde, Drenthe Province, in the Netherlands, Berghuis graduated cum laude in interior design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, followed by a degree in painting at the Ateliers '63 (now De Ateliers) in Amsterdam, Netherlands. From 1969 to 1989 Berghuis exhibited with the renowned Art & Project Gallery in Amsterdam, with two exhibitions in 1974 and one in 1980. Smilde
Smilde is a town in the Netherlands' northern province of Drenthe and lies about southwest of the province capital of Assen. Smilde was a separate municipality until 1998, when it became a part of Middenveld. However, that name changed in 2000 and was renamed the municipality of Midden-Drenthe. History The village was first mentioned in 1846 as Smilde. The etymology is unclear. Smilde is a elongated canal village which developed around 1770. Between 1767 and 1780, the was dug to excavate the peat in the area. The first settlement was called Kloosterveen and was later renamed to Smilde. The Dutch Reformed church was built between 1780 and 1788 in Louis XVI style. It was restored in 1963. The former town hall was originally built as a villa in Renaissance Revival style and was named Villa Maria. In 1931, it became town hall. Smilde was home to 1,675 people in 1840. The Gerrit Rietveld Academie, also known as Rietveld School of Art & Design and Rietveld Academy, is an art academy in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The academy was founded in 1924 and offers programs in fine arts and design. Ateliers '63
De Ateliers (formerly Ateliers '63) is an independent art school in located in Amsterdam. It was founded in Haarlem in 1963, among others by Ger Lataster, Mari Andriessen, Nic Jonk, Theo Mulder and Wessel Couzijn. This "group of established artists... agreed that the formative process of fine artists should be more individually directed than the learning of a trade or the studying of a science." De Ateliers offers a postgraduate program, where young artists can work in their own workshops with accompanied by renowned artists and critics. Students are called 'participants'. Art & Project was a leading contemporary art gallery by Geert van Beijeren & Adriaan van Ravesteijn from 1968 to 2001 in Amsterdam and Slootdorp, the Netherlands, as well as an influential art magazine published by the gallery between 1968 and 1989.
